Sharapova must be breathing a sigh of relief that Chakvetadze was able to eke her way past Venus Williams. While she did post an extremely narrow win over Venus at the Nasdaq, Venus is playing much better now then she was then, and her other 3 encounter with a Williams this year including Venus at Wimbledon have been good old fashioned street muggings.

In Chakvetadze she plays an opponent she has already beaten twice this year in the quarters of a Grand Slam, in Australia and in France, both in straight sets. Chakvetadze's inability to come close to beating Sharapova on clay, by far Maria's worst surface, cant help her confidence for this match. However she is on a roll, winning 2 tournaments leading into this, now her big win over Venus. So who knows what might happen.

Maria tends to get up to play fellow Russians however. So while I would much rather see Anna win I have to say Maria in 3 sets.

Sharapova is 4-0 against Chakvetadze and a heavy favorite in this match. I didn't Chakvetadze could get past Venus but I was wrong. I'm rooting for Chakvetadze but I think Sharapova will win.

I am hoping Chakvetadze's momentum, confidence, and continous improvement as a player shows through. However she couldnt even come close to beating Sharapova on clay at the French Open, when Maria arguably wasnt even playing that well. That definitely worries me about her chances, as I am also pulling for her.

like both players. can't lose!

Chakvetadze is in better form than Sharapova. Sharapova's easy victories this week have more to do with her opponents than with her. Mirza's second serve was just a banquet for her yesterday.

That said, Chakvetadze played a tough 3-setter late last night, and Sharapova skated through an early 2-setter. Maria will be better-rested, esp. considering their schedules for the past month.

THAT said, Chakvetadze still gets the edge, IMO. All that tennis + all those wins + just beating venus = uber-confidence.

chakvedatze seems to be good player

I have not had a chance to watch womens tennis recently outside of the top 5-6 players, but Chakvedatze seems to be pretty good player - gritty and quite intelligent in the way she defends and counter punches and always seems to get her shot pretty deep. I would love to see her do well on the tour.

Tired of seeing the williams sister play their power game what with all the unforced errors thy seem to make these days.

Sharapova will win for the following reasons:

1. She owns Chaky. 4-0 head to head. She always finds a way to win even the close matches.

2. Chaky has played for like 3 weeks straight now, singles AND doubles. Plus the long 3 setter against Venus. Maria has breezed through and had plenty of time to rest.

3. Maria doesn't make as many errors as Venus. Venus really should have won the match last night. She was aggressive and in control and then throws in a timid double-fault on her only matchpoint

Sharapova thumped Chakvetadze, showing some unusually (for her) great touch and powerful groundstrokes, and holding her serve together well enough to win. At the same time, I think the Acura schedulers could have had Sharapova and Chakvetadze play the late semi so that Chakvetadze could have rested. After her match with Venus last night, she played doubles, then had to play the early match against a well-rested sharapova. She was clearly in pain today--either fatigued or cramping, I couldn't tell you which.

Not saying Chakvetadze would have beaten Sharapova in the evening match, but it would have given her a fairer shake. Just my opinion.

Chakvetadze won her doubles match afterward, defeating the 2nd seeded team :)

Chakvetadze didn't play doubles after defeating Venus. She already played (and won) her doubles quarterfinal match on Thursday afternoon. Thus, she didn't have to play a doubles match on Friday.

The Friday evening doubles match was Hsieh/Kudryavtseva v Srebotnik/Sugiyama.
