Adult Tennis Camp?

I've been toying around with the idea of doing a weekend Adult Tennis Camp somewhere in New England. What's the consensus here? Are they a good value for what you spend? I do weekly lessons with a coach but thought a Camp could be a good time and give me an opportunity to pick up some tips.

Second question would be if anyone has recommendations. I don't spend a ton of money of vacations as it is so I figured this could be a good substitute.

"value" is partly defined by what you're looking to get out of it.
if you're just looking at tennis improvement, and only things related to that , i don't think camps are good value (eg. account for room&board, time&cost to travel, etc...).... i think you're better off finding a good coach locally, find some folks to practice with (or a hitting coach - usually cheaper),...
but you mention "good time"... my experience with camps is you get to meet similar minded folks (tennis!), drinks & food after, entertainment, etc... high volume of balls, alot of social tennis (not necessarily isntruction geared for you)... and maybe all together it's a good value.

Okay! Sounds like a camp is good for the experience, but not a cost effective means of improvement.

Following along the thread of going for the experience, what are your thoughts on going big and spending the week at like the IMG Tennis Academy for an adult camp? It's pricey, but it seems like a cool environment to spend a week in!

sounds like it would be a great experience.. haven't done it myself...
honestly if were to do something like that i'd have to spend a year getting in shape to complete a week of something like that (i'd want an "adult camp" where the coaches treat you like you're a "junior in training" but your fellow campers are adults... and i am definitely not in shape to do something like that for 4h/d, 5d in a row)
that said, if i did do it, i'd go to europe and do it as half vacation (though not sure i'd have the energy to site see after :p)... in barcelona, i did a daily private with a former pro that used to teach the juniors at the sanchez casal academy... it was a struggle to last 1.5h of what he was putting me through :p

My ‘plan’ is to do Piatti in Italy this September. I’m returning to gym routine and tennis every alternating day to build up for that.

Out of curiosity, what does that "getting in shape" look like for you? I have had that same thought, after contemplating a week camp and am wondering how any person could survive 5+ hours a day on the court for a week.

I just got back into it after a few years, and after 4 days of playing I've been feeling it. I'm 28 and in am in decent shape but I'm feeling pretty wiped after 4 days of 1.5-2 hours of playing. I've only just recently been able to add a few days of lifting, and I'm thinking that's the path to getting that endurance. I'm assuming that I will be able to gradually be able to add more weekly court time until that 5 hours a day number seems less intimidating.

in my mind, id have to get back to being able to run 1M in under 6min.

I'm doing Romania in two weeks for 1.5 months (but probably with side tours to Scandinavia and Greece). Good value for your money tennis wise and not only.

In terms of US adult camps, I liked what happened to a friend of mine who went to Boletierrie's- he returned with an improved !HBH and overall better (after probably 3 days out of 4- which he didn't last), while another, who goes to a no name camp, ruined further his so so 1 HBH.

How about jumping rope or plain jumps? Can you do 1000 in row? That helps. Plus running etc. Core? HIT biking?

where are you playing/working on tennis at in Romania? I've never been to Romania.

I'm open to it! At the moment I look at it like this:

  1. Gradually increase on court time to acclimate to longer training times (in order to survive 5 hour camp days)
  2. Compound lifts 3 days a week for muscle development and injury prevention
  3. Active Recovery during tennis off days (30 mins light biking, hiking, walk the dog etc.)
  4. Stretching/Foam rolling for recovery and injury prevention
  5. Healthy eating to cut down mass and get nutrients needed to recover
Between all of the items above AND a full time job/misc commitments, it's tough to squeeze extra things in! I think as my base of endurance increases, I will be able to add other things such as jogging and jumprope

When I read about your form I was like "wow". I so hate that during the summer there are summer camp. I'd love an adult camp because I'd love to meet up new people play tennis and - don't kill me - have a glass of wine.
I definitely don't need a great trainer since my tennis skills are.. I've played since being a kid and my skills are subpar.
Do you think that the Rafa's/Serena's trainer academy are any good? Or just pr?

Just curious, but I'd be interested in joning any one of you guys at a camp. I did one a couple months ago at the Rafa Nadal camp in Isla Mujeres mexico and it was just an ok experience. We had 3 others in the group and the levels were all over the place. The instruction was great, but I was unable to drill with fellow campmates because I was hitting with pace. I ended up toning it down and pretty much treating it like a workout. Would love to play with some serious folks. I'm open to anywhere in the world. I work remote.

Great thread. I also work remotely and am somewhere between a 4.0-4.5... I'm not as young as I was :) 43 now but I'm thinking of spending a month somewhere in Europe where I can work (I'm also remote), get access to great clay courts and a good community of players. Maybe I'll do a camp for a weekend or a week. At the moment places in Barcelona, Portugal and Cyprus are on my list
