Ankle Instability/Surgery?! HELP PLEASE

Hi all, I'm 19 years old and used to be a competitive runner for 5 years since I was 12. I took up tennis when I was 13 years old and play it from the beginning of spring right through until the end of summer every year. Over my running years, I have twisted my left ankle on numerous occasions on uneven ground and general rolling-inwards of the ankle and so it has been a problem for quite some time. Casually playing football with friends I have also twisted my left ankle too.

A couple of months ago I fell off my bicycle and badly twisted my left ankle upon landing and couldn't walk properly for a week until the pain started subsiding and swelling reduced. However, since then, I have had extreme foot pain (middle of foot) upon waking up from bed and warming up before exercise as well as during the day generally when standing for long periods of time or walking for an extensive amount of time. I have also developed a slight limp when walking that is very irritating. In addition the lateral part of my ankle is starting to hurt quite bad and now I can't play tennis or run properly either for any decent amount of time and I cant stop thinking about it. I just want to train and run everyday but I cant. While resting though there is no pain whatsoever.

I will make an appointment with the doctor tomorrow, but is there any advice that anybody can give please!? I don't think anything else can help apart from surgery to tighten back up the ligaments in my left ankle. I'm starting university soon too and was looking forward to playing over the fall but that looks increasingly unlikely now. Thanks for reading guys!
