Are you looking forward to Raonic as the next dominant #1?

There was a time when I thought it couldn't get worse for tennis than Djokovic at #1. A boring, defensive pusher with an equally boring personality. But now we have Murray.

Once the big 4 leaves the picture, the throne belongs the Raonic. On the plus side, he's not a baseline basher. Also his girlfriend is a model. I don't think the competition can get any worse in the future, so at least he won't be cakewalking his way into so many GS finals.

Are you ready?

I forgot the set up of that episode. Why was Jerry letting Milos beat him in front of a girl he liked again?

Who really cares who's number one?? Most of the best matches I've seen in my life have been between two guys ranked somewhere between 11 and 25 battling each other like crazy because they both want to get to the top 10.

I don't think he will automatically become number 1. Can see younger players stepping up to win the big titles before he does.

The #1 guy plays in most of the biggest matches. 2015 was a total snore fest with Djokovic winning so much, so easily.

The Bad Tennis Player[edit]
Jerry meets George at a private tennis club to play tennis. He goes to the pro shop where he is pressured into buying a brand new racquet by the worker there — an Eastern European man named Miloš (Mark Harelik). Later, while playing at a different club with Elaine, Jerry discovers that Miloš is a horrible tennis player. In Jerry's eyes, this undermines Miloš' credibility as a salesman.

When Jerry confronts Miloš at the pro shop, he offers to do anything in exchange for Jerry not revealing his secret. Jerry implies that if Miloš sets him up with an attractive woman that they see in the shop, he will be silent. Later Jerry runs into the woman, who is named Patty (Ivana Miličević), waiting for him outside his apartment. She initially comes on strong, but recoils in shame after revealing that she is Miloš' wife and was instructed to come onto Jerry by her husband (of course she does not know Miloš' reason for setting up the date was to convince Jerry to keep his secret). The incident makes her lose respect for Miloš.

In a new deal, Miloš wants Jerry to let him win in a game of tennis to regain Patty's respect. During the game, Miloš becomes boastful and gloating. After winning another game against Jerry, he exclaims "Another game for Miloš!" Frustrated at Miloš' taunts, Jerry begins to play harder. He hits a ball wide of Miloš, who swings wildly at it, releasing his racquet into the air, which finally comes down on another tennis player, who falls on a ball machine, redirecting its aim to Kramer's head.

Raonic will never be #1, never mind "dominant." All his endless hard work and training will never get him close to bagging #1.

Ah thanks. Poor Jerry. The only guy in the world who ends up doing a favor for a guy who owes him a favor.

Seems like he's injured too much to really be a dominant #1. When the big 4 retire or drop out he'll have his chances to sneak a Slam or maybe even a few, but he won't be a dominant #1 like those guys were.

Raonic? Painful to watch. Reminds me of the boring 90s. Huge cannon serve, no rallies. No athleticism. Less personality than virtually every other pro on the circuit.

I feel that as a Canadian I have to cheer for Milos, but he does not make it easy to root for him. If finds himself in a rally situation, he lurches around the court like an Imperial Walker from Star Wars and at times even looks like a baby giraffe learning to walk. His backhand is pretty useless. And to top it off, his ego and demeanor off the court is very un-Canadian.

I think his biggest tennis accomplishment will be the fact that he got to as high World #3 with the least amount of tennis skills.

If he manages to improve even more, I wouldn't mind that.

I don't think Djokovic is one of them at all, but I never understood criticism towards more defensive players. All this stuff about aggressive players being superior is nonsense. The important thing is to go out and prove that he or she is good enough to achieve the #1 ranking or whatever is the goal. The style isn't crucial, we have had p
layers of all kinds of players giving us amazing entertainment, not just elegant aggressive guys like Federer.

They are superior to watch, which is important to most people. The NFL made it easier for teams to pass the ball because no one wants to see 3 yards and a cloud of dust football. The NHL mandated smaller goalie pads when defense started to dominate. Zone defense is (mostly) illegal in the NBA because fans want to see Kobe and Lebron take it to the rack. Tennis is the only sport I can think of where they actually manipulated the game (via slower, uniform courts) to favor slow, defensive play.

Not really. For example Nadal has contributed to memorable tennis matches so much, maybe more than anyone else, and most would call him defense orientated. Despite that, the things he did on the court have helped him build one of if not the biggest fanbase ever, absolutely massive. A good part if not majority of great matches overall happened on surfaces that are considered slower, at least that's been the case for the last 10-15 years. Those years include the period when Federer was at his peak as well. And the main problem is that a lot of you guys want defensive or how you'd say "pushing, grinding" play to die completely. That's not really asking for variety, that's just being a phony and a crybaby.

Defensive tennis will never die. I'd be happy if defensive players went back to being "clay court specialists" instead of winning nearly every tournament without having to do much aside from hit topspin groundstrokes from behind the baseline.

I'd also like some guys like Dimitrov, Zverev and few others to have more success but I think you are underestimating the work players put in to win tournaments. If defensive guys just needed to play topspin groundstrokes to win that implies the superior to watch guys are a complete joke. But there is no room for that at the top of the game.

Raonic is not winning a "few" slams. He is a one and done kinda guy.

Then we'd have to hear you stupidly claim he is a better player than Roddick or Hewitt.

That ain't gonna happen. Before BIG4 retire he'll be in his late 20ties/ early 30ties and younger player will take up.

Don't think he will be. Certainly not a dominant number one if he ever gets there. It would be extremely depressing were it to happen then. Infinitely worse than Djokovic, although imagine he wouldn't have the same desperation to be popular as Djokovic does, but he would make up for that by being so incredibly dull to watch.

Nadal at #1 would great but highly improbable, but he is a CC specialist and nothing more. So once we hit the 2nd half of 2017, Nadal will sadly decline. Djokovic is the definition of all-court-surface coverage, but he is going through a slump. And Federer is a grass/hard court specialist. His clay game is average at best since 2011.

Are you Canadian? :p Well, Berdych's GF is a model too and he is nowhere close to #1. The next #1 has got to be maybe Milos or Kei if he gets super lucky and dominates like he did back in '14.

Fed's clay game is "average" since 2011? You might mean "average" by his lofty standards, but his clay results since 2011 would define almost any other pro's career. Let's see...

Madrid: Champion 2012
Rome final: 2013, 2015
Monte Carlo final: 2014

The only guys who have better results on clay since 2011 are Nadal, Djoker and Stan. Hardly average.

He talks a little too much about working hard which is always very sus.

You rarely hear the top guys do it since for them working insanely hard is Business as Usual.
