I am just learning to string, and understand ATW as stringing one piece with the crosses going top to bottom. I was wondering if you can avoid this by alternating the starting position so that the mains finish at the head so that your cross starts at the head. Also what is the purpose of pulling from the throat when you have 8 mains in the bridge or pulling from the head when 6mains are in the bridge? Wouldn't all racquets with 16 mains have the mains finish at the head if you started pulling from the throat? Thanks to all the posters for the previous tips, this board is great.

The easiest way for you to see what would happen is do it. Don't tension the mains, just prelace all of the mains. You will see why it won't work

i agree, just try it...it's where the edges of the throat meets the rest of the grommets on the outside of the frame. how are you going to weave the string from the throat to the outside? the string has to come down from the top of the frame to go through the grommet to the outside. kinda hard to visualize, but try it, and you'll see what i mean.

Thanks, i didn't have to do too much pre lacing to figure out the throat grommets dictate which way the strings run.... and you can't do it... d'oh

There is more to it than that. It is a method that allows you to use a one piece job and string the crosses top to bottom on a racquet where the mains end at the throat. These normally would have to be strung using two pieces of string or bottom to top, which most manufacturers don't recommend.
