ATP tour is damaging players

Guga- shortly after hes defeat to Sanchez, Guga beleives he will not able to compete at the highest level until next year. Although hes hip pain has subsided, does not have the physical strength to compete with the top players.

Haas- Shoulder problems, seem to have affected hes serve as it no longer has the sting and potency. Unlikely to ever reach hes career high ranking of no 2.

Coria- Hampered by shoulder problems, and subsequently did not reach an ATP tour final until Rome. Suprisingly KO of the FO before the quarters.

Moya- shoulder problem, is unlikely to regain an end of years masters spot based on current performance and lack of points defended during the clay court swing.

Ferrero- Unlikely to gain many points during wimbledon and had a mediocre French run to say the least. Still not 100% healthy after various illnesses, on the road to making a comeback.

With all these guys not 100% who is there to challenge Federer??. Imagine if the Guga of 2000 (the masters cup winner who defeated Agassi and Sampras on hardcourt) was fully fit, I personally think he would destroy Federer with hes big serve and fluid backhand. Haas (when at no 2) if 100% would certainly contend with Fed on hardcourts. Ferrero could also possibly eclipse Fed on hard-courts based on the US open form, but it seems a tall-order for these guys now to ever conted with Federer.

Lol i belive that Ferrero and Guga at 100% could beat Federer at FO. And how is this the ATP's fault? are you suggesting shorter years/events?

In their primes, Kuerten and Ferrero might beat Federer 6 out of 10 on clay. They lose on every other surface, and nobody else you mention touches Fed anywhere.

You're talking one-surface-wonders and never-was's versus a guy who is going to go down as one of the couple best players of all time.

if kuerten had not suferred a hip injury after hes masters cup win on hardcourt, then he would have dominated and improved on hard-courts. Kuerten def Agassi in Lisbon 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the final with both players in their prime.

Due to the intense schedule and the short off-season players are being crippled. Whos next???. One thing for sure is that as soon as Fed is injured he will be finished and unable to regain the world no 1 spot.

I agree the lack of an off season doesn't allow players to recover and rest. Put the sheer force they exert on their bodies - the stiff rackets, poly strings, power game - leads to injuries...The days of the classic strokes with wood rackets are over...Hit the crap out of the ball all the time...I can't image the force of swinging that hard and return a ball with the amount of velocity and spin that the players of day generate. Plus more hard court tournaments than 20 years ago...

SIMPLE:

This IS NOT a moronic post.....US OPEN is done Sept 10..roughly....anothe rmonth of tournaments...followed by MASTERS CUP in MID-OCTOBER...then followed by Davis Cup Finals...Then Two Month Break before January Season.
ALSO.........
Extend the grass court season 2 more weeks..and cut some tournaments out of the LONNGGGG Hardcourt Summer.....

Moya=shoulder
Roddick-Wrist(due to his crappy Babolat)
Kiefer-Neck
Hewitt- Ribs
Guga- Hip
Coria- Shoulder
Ferrero- Arm
RAFTER QUIT because he couldnt take it anymore
and although Agassi is getting old he can't take the ridiculous schedule.

guga can dominant in clay even these days w/ these players when he's 100%... but i'm skeptical about beating federer on any other surfaces... it would be close though.

I feel gugafanatic and theace21 have made several pertinent points here.

ATP should be doing more in terms of:

- limiting the stiffness and size of the rackets used by pros
(if not the public), in order to limit the artificially-gained power

- limiting the characteristics of the strings (eliminate too harsh strings)

- lentgthening the off-season
