I am in need of backhand help. I am a 4.0/4.5 player trying to take it to the next level and I feel my backhand is holding me back. I hit a two-handed bh with a continental grip with my right hand a semi-western with my left. I usually miss long and its very inconsistent. Any backhand tips that have helped you or just general tips would be very helpful. (sorry i do not have a video) Thanks

Then do what the great Backhanders do.
Learn the Semi-Western grip.
You will have a very solid wrist in hitting position and topspin will be easy for you. It is not easy to learn without having a good pro who also uses one teaching you the techniques.
I can highly recommend Tom Avery's tape on the BH. www.tomavery.com.
Worth every penny of the 40 bucks.

I've never seen a 4.5 player with an inconsistent backhand.

Any 4.5 player will tell you that if you're hitting long then your racquet face is too open or your contact point is wrong. Check you racquet angle at the point of contact. Make sure you're swinging low to high (for topspin). Hitting long is common for those that are reaching to hit the ball. Reaching is generally a sign of poor footwork.

I really like the Tom Avery tapes as well. Excellent instruction.

If you are making good contact and have power, it seems like you just need topspin. This can easily be fixed. In a 2H topspin stroke, the racquet makes a small dip as the swing begins forward so it can come from below the ball and create the lift necessary to spin it. The racquet head will begin from knee or thigh level rather than the waist. I could try to explain this, but it's better just to see it.

I used to have exactly the same problem. I could really cream the ball, but it would go in the net or long a lot of the time. My 2H groundstrokes now are at least, if not more, consistent than my forehand.
