Battle for the no.1 ranking

Nadal has now opened up a 3890 point lead in the rankings (4690 if he wins on Sunday). He can still pick up points in Miami and Wimbledon to soften the blow should he fail to defend Canada/Cinci/US Open.

So when's the earliest Nadal could lose the no. ranking?

If he isn't injured then he won't be losing it this year. The gap is huge and he has no points to defend in Miami or at Wimbledon plus he is highly likely to win Monte Carlo back (unless the weather is overcast and cold like last year's final).

It really depends on how the others play, but this year feels similar to Federer's 2006 and 2007 in that there's a surprise finalist at the AO and Nadal is ranked 1 and the favorite for the title, like Federer was in both 2006 and 2007.
