Blake was lucky....

I saw everyone of blake's matches this past week because USA is going to show the "$$$" matches..

1.) Blake was lucky to beat russel in three though sets. Russel should have won the first and third sets.

2.) Blake was lucky to beat Santoro, having to save 3BPs at the 2nd to last game. If santoro wasn't a dynosaur he could easily hang for 5+ sets.. How funny blake's only 5 set win was off a cramping 31 yr old lol, and even that was close as hell.

3.) Blake barely squeeked off a win from Koubek who was actually out playing blake in the first three sets. Funny watching a 5'8 guy dictate play and dominate blake for three whole sets but too bad koubek just wasn't consistent enough. He finally lost his edge after losing a few important points each set to get behind in the scoreboard. How sad.

4.) A cat's got only 9 lives. Blake used up too many so he had to fall to the great Haas! At least we get to see more footage of Sara Foster.

IMO you only need luck to win the lotery, everything else you have and achive is because of your own effort and choices you make. He deserve to be where he is otherwise he wouldnt be there. He WON those matches because he was the better player that day, on the other hand Haas was better that him on their last meeting. It is as simple as that. People should stop saying bad things of Blake, he is a good player, something you dont get to be just with luck.

What an ignorant post. Crap like this makes me freaking hate coming to this forum. Unless you think you can do better bro, why dont you just keep your mouth shut and appreciate the great tennis being played?

He does have a point though, Blake played very poorly in most of his matches, especially for a supposed #9 in the world.

So, you've never been critical of a sports person, team, actor, author, anything - even though you knew you couldn't do any better ?

Blake must like Roddick is pretty one-dimensional.
One thing about Blake's matches are his shotmaking abilities but he goes as his shots go. We have recognize that Blake has probably topped out on his talent, which is much higher than any expected when he first went on the tour.
He needs to get mentally stronger and not be on such a roller coaster ride during a match.

Actually Santoro is 34 years old, 35 in December which in the life of a ATP player is comparable to 70 year old playing USTA league tennis. Blake was lucky to beat Santoro for sure. It seems like Blake has no game plan when he is on the court. He just bangs away at every ball. The only reason Blake gets a lot of exposure is because of the country he is a citizen of.

federer is lucky many players are far less superior. isner is lucky he's a foot taller than everbody. nadal is lucky that clay is a tennis surface. you could also say nadal was lucky to beat federer on clay, and that fed should've won the first and third sets. but that wouldn't make any sense, would it?

sure, you would think that the #9 player in the world would roll over everyone in his draw. but this isn't poker. luck isn't going to bring you all the way to the 4th round.

I really like James Blake. I just wish he would back off his total power game and learn to win without resorting to the power.

Even though he almost lost to Santoro, Blake could have learned a great deal from that match. At times he took a little off his first serve and demonstated a little more patience. Unfortunately he too often resorts to fighting power with power.

I often wonder if playing doubles would help some of the gunner-first-class players. Get them to use more touch, placement, vary the speed and then turn the power on at the right time.

Great post. I agree. He tried to kill some second serves and missed in the 5th set and should have tried to get them in.

In my opinion, Blake didn't look good the whole tournament. He played much better last year, and this year looked tired.

blake was coming off of two great tourneys the last few weeks, and he still made it pretty far in the uso... he played poorly and still has a great opportunity to beat haas. so i don't know what all this blake is horrible and lucky talk is all about. i agree he did not play great, but to win 3 matches that he "should have lost" can speak for itself.

Are any of us really that surprised? This is how Blake is, take it or leave it. He has weapons and speed, so he can beat top players. But, he's a so-so competitor and strategist, so he loses to top players and lower-ranked players.

This has been his career ever since he entered the top 20. I don't know why so many are "disappointed" when this happens. It's typical James. He's a great tennis player and a nice guy, but he won't ever take that next step and become elite. He's not alone in this regard. Someone has to occupy the tier below the top players.

exactly. i was just glad he even got as far as he did and won a 5 setter. but i do think he has potential to be great, but don't know that he ever will be. he has the weapons and the physical ability, but he is missing the brains and ability to come through in the clutch. but none of this means he was lucky all week to win the matches he won.

But then again Santoro is a magician. Did you see the shot he was coming up with it looked liked he was switching hands, unbelievable. Blake is a choker but I still love him and root for him.

That's real shame of it. Of all the American players, Blake has the most raw talent out of any of them. He has the athleticism and timing to be a champion, just not the head or the heart it seems.
