BreakPoint and all......Vantage....my Holy Grail

First, I'd like to thank whoever posted the Vantage 50% sale in Feb. I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise.

Second, I'd like to thank BreakPoint specifically for his comparative reviews of Vantage and other similar frames. They helped me take the plunge with confidence.

Third, I'd like to thank Mr. Paul Angell for having the brains and the ballz to step out on his own and found this wonderful company, designing this wonderful frame. I'd also like to thanks his engineers for their brilliant work.

I purchased 3 custom frames (never demoed btw) for just over $300. With the regular price being $220 I would say I got a steal, even if it was a gamble. The wait, almost a month, was definitely worth it.

I've only played with Wilson Pro Staff sticks, first the PS 95, then the 85, then the Tour 90. I tried the nCode but didn't care for the balance. I've hit with and briefly enjoyed a few Heads and little else.

I've been hitting with the Vantage for the past ten days and every day it gets sweeter and sweeter.

I have the 90'' frame at 70RA, 27 1/4, 330gr.

PROS???? EVERYTHING. Baseline rallies, serves, volleys, overheads, forehands, backhands, simply everything. The sweet spot is butter, delicious. This particular combination is a very demanding racquet, most similar to the 85, in that it does very little for you and demands a very solid, confident, full, yet precise stroking of the ball and POC. At first I wasn't sure what it felt like, the feeling was so distinct, so different. In some ways it reminds me of the 85, especially the way it treats off-center shots, but in others, particularly the frame balance and shape, it feels like a Head Prestige 93. I use liberal amounts of lead tape but this did not disturb the balance of the frame at all.

I've been playing with a friend who uses a nCode 90 and occasionally I would switch back and forth with him for comparison sake. The Vantage was every bit as solid as the nCode but it doesn't feel muted the way the nCode feels. It was interesting. After using the Vantage, I actually liked the nCode. Interesting.

Another very interesting aspect of the frame is that it has this lightness to it, regardless of how much lead tape I use. It feels light, even though it's noticeably heavier than the nCode and the Tour 90. Very interesting.

CONS??? The only shortcoming I can give this racquet is in comparison to my Tour 90......The Vantage is a 19mm frame while the Tour 90 is a 17mm. Trivial though it sounds, the maneuverability is noticeably enhanced with 2 fewer millimeters. But even with this, the balance and solidity of the frame is simply superb, amazing sometimes. Literally, sometimes I look at it and wonder how it does what it does.

The most revealing experience in the last ten days came when another friend of mine was hitting with his K-Factor 90s. The K-Factor was in the running until I hit a few balls with it against a wall and felt it was too soft.

After trading racquets with my friend and hitting a few balls on a court I literally couldn't wait to get my Vantage back in my hand. The K-Factor felt flimsy and cheap, yes cheap was the word that came to my mind. My Tour 90 feels more solid and well-sorted than the K-Factor. Honestly, I can't imagine how anyone could switch from a nCode to a K-Factor, much less Federer. I'll believe he plays with the racquet Wilson sells us when I hit with it. No way is he playing with this stick.

Of course I didn't tell my friend this. lol To me the K-Factor is so different from every other Wilson frame that Wilson could sell the nCode, the Tour 90 and the K-Factor and not lose a dime. They're each very distinct frames.

Ultimately, the Vantage doesn't feel like anything else. It has a distinct feel that may or may not be for people. Honestly, I could see TW carrying them, the basic frames, just like they carry any other frame.

TW, if you're reading this call Paul Angell and work out a deal. You sell the pre-built frames for $190 or so, and he could sell the custom frames for their current price. You're missing out on some marvelous frames.

If you're looking for a pure players frame, very demanding but very rewarding, take a serious, serious look at the Vantage 90s.

I got the stock VT 001 and it's now in my Prestige collection. Love it even with the cheap Vantage Syn Gut. I can't wait to try with a poly. Nice racquet overall with a classic feel (read PC 600).

I just had it strung with Pro Hurricane Tour 17. I am frothing at the mouth to see how it feels. Well, almost. lol

I'll keep you posted. I have a few other polys that I'm going to put in them. Pro Hurricane 17, Signum Poly Plasma and Unique's Big Hitter, the Luxilon knock-off.

Do you have any other poly recommendations? I've been out of the string loop this winter.

Well, for fun I strung one of my 100" Vantages with Tecnifibre Redcode 16 at 45 in the mains and 50 in the crosses. It may not me everyone's cup of tea, but I'm loving it after two matches with it. I might go back with NRG2 in the crosses but keep the same low tensions.

Cavaleer, I too found my Vantage racquet marvelous... My previous racquet was a Pure Drive, and I gambled on a vantage 95", i though i was shooting in the dark there but once I hit with it, it was awesome. The sweetspot like you said is butter. It feels so good... I strung my racquet with a poly at 24 kilos and it's awesome SPPP 1.18. I can smack the hell out of the ball and still keeping it inbounds... the serves are awesome, groundstrokes too goo to be true... I always hated my 2HBH, now I love it... the vantage gave my backhand depth and pace like i never had it is actually hard to miss a backhand with this... The only thing im finding hard to adjust but that is probably because i moved from a 100" frame to a 95 is volleys...sometimes i mishit...

And i totally agree when you say they feel ligther than they actually are... When i received my racquet and held it in my hand i thought no way this is a 350 gr racquet (strung) but it was...352 to be more exact... I'm sure I'll buy future frames from vantage

Hey Cavaleer, you're quite welcome! :D

I'm glad to hear that you're loving your new Vantages! Please keep us updated as you play with them more.

I'm sort of now regretting not picking up a few extra pre-built VT001's (my custom has the same exact specs anyway, except for a Wilson instead of the standard Dunlop grip shape, which is usually fine with me) during the 50% off sale. They were going for only $59 each plus shipping during the sale! :-o Of course, they were sold out within a few hours but I was actually on the Vantage website right when the sale started and even added the frames to my shopping cart just to see what the price would be, but never pulled the trigger as I wanted to try the K90 first. Oh well, like the saying goes: You snooze....you lose. :-(

Caveleer,
My brother ordered 2 customs, and is really enjoying them as well. It has really upped his confidence from the baseline. For almost 6 months he was trying different frames, but when we hread about the sale we took a chance. Very solid rackets, lots of pop, and large amounts of spin.

I regret not purchasing a couple myself during the sale.

I also ordered 2 frames during the sale period but screwed my order up cause they gut too heavy and the sw was to high for my liking. I called Paul the other day and told him all my problems. He offered to amend my sticks to my liking for free if i sent them back. I did and he changed lenght, weight, balance and grip shape. I just got them back and am fully satisifed. He even called me on my cell once since they were late by two days.
This is what i call first class customer service.

Wow! That's incredible!! What other company would bend over backwards to this degree like that to satisfy a customer? Kudos to Vantage!!

65lbs. This is the tension I always use. I might use a lower tension in the future because the Vantage fram is already so stiff but we'll see.

Cavaleer

poly + 90" frame + 65 pounds + RA70 stiffness frame = miniature sweetspot and lots of potential for injury = be careful w. that

The 95'' will give you even more control and precision on those volleys, my friend. :)

You should try a 90'' for kicks. You might get sucked in. lol

Happy hitting,

I'll defiitely stay aware. Depending on how these play, I may dial it back to 60-62. I'll know for sure in a few days. I appreciate the warning.

Break, as long as you have one. ;)

How's it going with the K-Factor?? You have the 90 or 95?? My younger brother is thinking about the 95s.

I've always had good volleys... it's only the adjusting to the new frame that i find it the harder...but its probably a matter of time until i get it right......

For others that can advice me... im playing a 95" 70 RA (although on RDC machine it said 64) but i ordered the 70... and playing a poly at 52 lbs, does this racquet have big injury potential ? should i decrease the tension for poly's even more ? thanks

I believe 52lbs will be fine.

I've given up on the K90 for now, just a bit too heavy for my aging shoulder. Mine weighed 13.2 oz. stock w/overgrip so maybe I was just unlucky in getting one that was way off spec on the high side. I'm looking into trying to get a lighter Asian K90 to try.

I've never tried the K95 but I've heard it's a totally different racquet, even more different than the nCode 95 was from the nCode 90, and I thought those two were pretty different already.

Hope you continue to enjoy your Vantages!

I was just teasing you about the volleys. :)

Your body will tell you if the tension is too high. I've just strung mine with Pro Hurricane Tour 17 at 65lbs. This is my normal tension but I may not need it as tight with the 70 RA frame. I'll keep you posted.

My Vantage was 90'' frame at 63RA, 27 1/4, 335gr, 12HL. It does feel in the between the Prostaff Classic and Prostaff 6.0 95 (I do play with both before)
The feeling of able to hit out on everyshots, that was nice. Strung with Unique BigHitter at 55 lbs. I may put some lead at 3 and 9 though, but it play fine at what it have now.

I totally agree. After buying 2 racquets in the Vantage sale, I don't even follow this section of the board seriously these days because the racquet is just perfect for me and I am not interested in anything else.

"Mr. K90" has given up on it? The end is near.
Hmmm....I don't see how I could be "Mr. K90" as I was probably one of the last people on this board to try it and then never claimed to love it. In fact, my initial impressions of it were far from positive.

I would more likely nominate CC as "Mr. K90" since he has provided more information on the K90 than anyone else here, he absolutely loves the racquet (I think he has like 8 of them now), and it would appear that he would call the K90 his "holy grail".
