Can anyone tell me what Ektelon Model this is?

First off, thanks to all who post here. I've enjoyed reading and learning from your knowledge. I've been a String Forum voyeur until now.

I think I have found a good deal on an older Ektelon upgraded to a Model H (my only knowledge is from what I've read here). The guy I bought it from said it had been upgraded but didn't have much more info than that. His wife was the stringer in the family and wasn't home. Paid $200 and based on what I've read here, I think I did well. So, I'm asking for feedback here so don't flame me too bad if I screwed up.

Anyway, I'm posting a picture and would like to get comments and advice / info on how to use this machine. I have never strung before but I had been looking to buy a string machine (Klippermate or Silent Partner) but took this opportunity when it presented itself.

Thanks in advance and I can't wait to learn and try my new (used) machine.

Any info, manual or links would be great. Also, how to maintain i.e. lubricate and clean.

Can anyone provide the brain cells necessary to post an image?

At least I've got 3 posts now!

Hi, dowjones

I believe that all photos have to be already on an Internet site somewhere to be inserted into a message. If you're trying to upload one from your PC, I don't think it will work.

If it's on the Internet, click on the Insert Image button at the top of your message. What I do is right click on the image I want to insert, view its properties, copy the properties line and paste it into the Insert Image pop-up. I think there are shortcuts to that, but it's what I've been doing.

If the photo exists on your PC, there are places where you can upload images then link to them to place them in a message.

I have owned a Model D (or DE), and currently have an H. I upgraded to the wise tension head 2 years ago. I have scanned a copy of the model D manual. Give me your email address and I will give you the link.

$200 is a great buy if it is upgraded to the model H...or at least I think so.

I think the unit was a 'D' and then upgraded to 'H'. I could be wrong but I'm basing my guess from the pictures that the frame support towers are 'H' type. However, looking at the turntable base, the clamp rails are offset to one side (the throat). I believe the model 'H' has offsets on both sides.

Regardless, your machine looks in excellent shape and the clamps are upgraded. If so, you got a great deal.

Have you tested the machine with a super-wide body frame? The problem I had with my model 'D' was that the frame mount and string clamps were not compatible with the wide-bodies.

mellowfelow, the one piece of documentation the guy had (you can see it in one of the pictures) says "The Professional Stringer's Guide to the Wide Body Racket by Ektelon". It shows the upgrade stuff to an H but I don't know enough about stringing or machines to know if I got a silk purse or a sow's ear (my grandmother would say that and I've never used it until now!)

The guide says "Adjustable glide bar adapts in height so that the clamp reaches the wide body string plane."

I guess I need a glossary and a picture of a machine to learn which parts are which. Anyone have such a thing?

Thanks mellowfelow, DJ

That's a nice looking machine, especially for that price!

And MUCH nicer than those little "x" marks that had been appearing in the earlier posts. :p

I'd say you got yourself a great deal. :)
