Can you leave the mains in 2 piece stringing?

Hi all,

I am new to the forum, but have been reading on and off for a few months. I was finally inspired to post when the local stringer started recommending that he restring only the crosses that break and leave the mains (Big Banger Alu) for two to three restringing of the crosses, depending on how long it takes for them to break. I apologize if this has been addressed already. Much as I would love to save the money, it doesn't seem like this would be a good idea. Any thoughts?

Hi and welcome to the boards.

Check out the sticky at the top of this section. What your stringer is mentioning is not a good practice. It'll be bad for the frame.

Any good, professional stringer wouldn't use such techniques. You'll come off worse in the long run.

Amen. You'll see that argument amongst many others on the sticky. The bottom line is this.

Professional stringers don't do it. But if you wanna string it yourself on your own racket, well there isn't anything we can do to stop you now is there? :p

one other thing, ive read in many places that some polys (maybe the cheap ones), dont hold their tension well, meaning they go dead fast, so if you are breaking the crosses, by the second set you go through they should be ready to change anyway

Thanks for pointing out the "sticky" (it took me a minute to figure this out). As I said, I will not do this. It was offered to me by the local stringer who strings for a lot of kids. I guess he is trying to save some money for them, but I agree that the risk isn't worth it for a few dollars. Thanks again.
