Chris Evert on Federer vs. Nadal (I’m guessing this was pre-Madrid final):

“The thing that concerns me about Roger is, I just don’t know if his best is going to be good enough to beat Nadal. I don’t really see him playing out of the box, so to speak; I don’t see him changing anything, and that is what must happen if he wants to turn the tide. And also you have the added dimension of Andy Murray emerging, and [Novak] Djokovic, he seems to have gotten it back together.

I think Roger’s his best coach. I don’t think there’s anyone better than him out there. Maybe someone to help him with training, fitness, getting stronger. If he can’t beat [Nadal], join him. Maybe he needs to get into the gym more. And by the way, he might be doing all this already, I don’t know. The fitness level could improve and that will bring along with it quickness and more power. But as far as playing the game and tactics, Roger is the best judge of that. Fitness helps you psychologically, there’s no doubt about it. When Martina started cleaning my clock, I said, I at least have to give myself a chance here, and so I went into the gym. Not to try to copy her, but just to be the best I could be and the strongest I could be. I think that’s what Roger needs to think about. Now’s not the time, but after this year when you have a period of six weeks, two months where you can really train hard.

Wow really? Didn't know she was so sensitive about Fed lol. Quite an interesting interview. I have to admit I agree with her on a lot of things, although I don't cry when Fed loses... .

For somebody who sounds unsure, she really says a lot. Roger's fitness is fine, it's his confidence that has changed. Over the years watching him, I cant remember a time where he was playing visibly tired or quit a match because he is injured. Do people expect him to be on top forever? He has ruled men's tennis for a long time, he's getting older and younger people are stepping up and playing better. Simple as that.

Well...not necessarily. I lost some respect for teh cry everytime he loses comment. I have no issue with her being his fan. There' something about Roger that makes prominent people in the sport decide that they love him and want to call him a God. In 2004 when Roger was playing the USO I remember Mary Carillo and McEnroe were already saying "this guy will likely go down as teh GOAT."

He had 3 slams....

Where's the love for Nadal? I really don't know...I feel like Nadal has really suffered because he started out really good and has improved. Federer was always teh guy who couldnt' get it together mentally, and then when he did he was this virtuoso genius.

I think if the first major introduction of Nadal to the tennis world was right now, and he was winning matches the way he is right now at 22, there'd be a bit more talk of being awed by this style of tennis and things like that.

He's in some sense penalized because we've watched him improve (his serve, backhand, slice, etc.) over the years, and see him go from primarily a Clay Court style player to I think one of the most complete players around right now.

I can't believe how underrated his 3 surface slam winning is to me. I mean, sure the grass is slower and stuff like that. Still, Roger couldn't do it...It may be the most underrated tennis feat of the last 10 or so years imo.

When Fed losses I just turn off TV with a big "damn you Roger!" thrown at it. Then I say to myself, maybe this time this loss will be enough to get a coach. It never was.

There is a lot of love for Nadal. Everytime I watch ESPN I wonder if someone there is in love with him or something. Nadal didn't get a lot of credit back then because he didn't have many results out of clay, and I guess many people didn't realte to his grinder style, and the fact that he didn't get many easy wins/points. But Nadal has proved everyone wrong and continued to imporve vastly on every surface, with winning major titles on grass and HCs as well as clay.

For Roger, I think Fed was loved back then because people were amazed by his elegant, smooth, sometimes falwless style of play. He made tennis look like an easy sport because of his huge talent. Today many people just hope this old Federer would come back, and he does from time to time, but not quite enough. Even with current Fed however, with a huge unforced errors count and not as many unbelievable winners as before, beating Fed is still almost mission impossible.

I dunno about that. Didn't Norman get around $23 million when he sold his major stock holdings in Callaway Golf years ago? That deal went under the radar. How much did Evert make from tournament winnings and Wilson endorsements years ago? Not much, in comparison.
Evert went thru a divorce as well, but I doubt she's making much dough from her pricey Boca Raton academy these days. We're in a recession, remember.

No offense, but there's no way that Nadal would have won Wimbledon against Federer in his prime there; and not when the grass was faster, as it was just several years ago. Nadal had the fortune of playing against Federer in a relative down year there.

Federer also has 3 of the slams; but at once in the same calendar year, and 3 times.

For sure, Nadal having 3 of the slams is impressive, but not as impressive as what Federer did for so many years.
