Chris Evert begins chemotherapy after ovarian cancer returns, will miss Australian Open

“Early detection saves lives. Be thankful for your health this holiday season,” said the International Tennis Hall of Famer.

You’ve got this, Chrissie.

On Friday, International Tennis Hall of Famer Chris Evert announced that her ovarian cancer has returned. The news comes 11 months after the 18-time major singles winner was declared cancer free.

During her first bout, Evert continually promoted the importance of getting checkups. The 68-year-old echoed that sentiment after sharing that she would be unable to join ESPN for next month’s Australian Open coverage in Melbourne, having begun her latest course of treatment.

“While this is a diagnosis I never wanted to hear, I once again feel fortunate that it was caught early,” Evert said in a statement shared by ESPN. “Based on a PET CT scan, I underwent another robotic surgery this past week. Doctors found cancer cells in the same pelvic region. All cells were removed, and I have begun another round of chemotherapy.

“I encourage everyone to know your family history and advocate for yourself.”

I thought Brigitte was battling breast cancer ?

Anyway, may God give them both the strength to fight another battle.

No, she has ovarian cancer, too.

Navratilova had breast cancer recently, I believe. Generally much less deadly these days, though Novotna died of it in 2017.

very sad to see such comments on such a thread too. Humanity never fails to shock me.

Chris Evert is only 1 among 8 Billion people who will all die some day or the other, we are all dying you know, everybody will die, nobody is immortal. Plus daily 150K people die on this earth, most of them we don't even know. The OP is "very sad" because she probably connects with Evert emotionally but the poster "alcarazwon" might have no such connect, that's why he is passing crude comments? It is possible, amidst these hard times humans lose the ability to care for things that dont matter to them, I wont blame them.

Yeah in such cases one should keep their trap shut and not pass insensitive comments.

Terrible. I hope she beats it once again just like the champion that she is.

She is fortunate that she has the resources that caught it early and is able to get the medical attention that she requires. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

^This.

P.S. Just watch some Chris Evert highlights, and she really has some of the GOAT two-handed backhand aesthetics.

I never was an Evert fan, I don't watch WTA, and I don't connect with her emotionally. That had nothing to do with sharing horrible news about one of the greats of tennis.

But I'm a tennis fan who greatly respects her career and her achievements, Chrissie won 18 slams and is a legend. Any normal human being has compassion for someone who is battling ovarian cancer which is almost always a death sentence. It's called being a normal, caring human being. The fact this had to be explained to you is utterly pathetic. Talk about a stone cold heart. I bet you swerve your car to run over dogs too, assuming you even have a car or could afford one.

The fact that the concept of sorrow because Chrissie is seriously ill baffles you is beyond belief. To non-psycopaths, hearing that someone has a cancer diagnosis is very sad and tragic news. Life must be a truly abysmal, horrifically lonely place for you to have so little understanding of a death sentence and to blithely dismiss it so callously.
