Compression shorts.. what the deal? Do they make a difference?

Noticed several players in sectionals this weekend wearing compression shorts. Then it made me think of the pros that seem to wear it. Does it really help with support and recovery? The Skins Men's A400 Series Half Tight is very pricey and makes a ton of representations. The other cheaper compression shorts don't say much.

Looking for some feedback on compression shorts in general and difference, if any, between the expensive and cheaper models.

I think there is some benefit to compression, eg. promoting blood flow and muscle recovery, but I think compression gear is mostly for comfort. If you're a guy it helps not to have your junk swinging around. It also helps wick away sweat and keep you warm when you're not playing.

Interesting. Is there much of a difference between the higher priced models and the lower priced ones? Or just marketing? The difference of $70 seems insane.

During my volleyball years, I felt the full leg compression leggings helped me recover faster. I feel like I don't get sore enough playing tennis to need them.

I wear them all the time. Got a bunch for $5/pair at a local Modell's clearance, and they are great. Have some Nike and Adidas ones too.

I played in normal underwear (Saxx boxer briefs) the other day and it sucked! Too thick, too loose, too hot.

I have two pair of Skins and a mix of Nike and Rebok. To be honest the skins do a better job. The gradient compression they use feels better. They are the Rolls Royce of compression. Costly but I think its worth it if you have the cash.

I actually find compression socks after a match more beneficial than compression shorts during a match.

Having said that, it's winter here and I'm currently playing in full length compression tights and shirt.

Compression does help in small amounts in recovery, depending on the compression type. However, it does nothing for muscular endurance. It does help with heating up the muscles a little faster, like an insulator, which is why players like Raonic used to wear those sleeves. A lot of it is also psychological.

Lol wow. So compression is not to keep your junk in place, and sizing up to give your crotch more room defeats the purpose of the compression. If it’s tight there, wear them a bit lower so it doesn’t ride up into your groin.

It’s to keep your muscles in place and help recovery as some people have commented. If you want to try it out UNIQLO sells some decent compression leggings for like $15 or something.

Hmm. Would you say the nike and rebok do nothing or still better than just not wearing any compression? I'm trying to decide which to go. I don't want to be cheap but the price difference is massive. Getting 2-3 of those is a ton of cash. As I don't want to be washing one multiple times a week.

Not only I play with compression shorts, I go full body compression gear when I take very long flights. They help the blood circulation a lot.
Yes, for lowering the risk of DVT, compression leggings and socks are a good idea.

As mentioned, 2XU, then Skins, are the best made and longest lasting compression garments. I still have my 2XU from 5 years ago and it gives better compression than any new UA/Nike/Adidas crappy 'compression' garments, but it is about 3x the price. Skins fits me a little better and are cheaper than 2XU, which tends to aim at triathletes as core customer base. Subsport is a brand I've tried which is about 90% of Skins but 50% the price, but it just didn't fit me as well.
Wearing 7-9" compression shorts under tennis shorts increase temperature, despite all the talk about wicking technology marketing BS. If you play in warm temperatures and can warm up properly, then a pair of jockstraps is probably the best for match play, then use the compression long sleeve shirts and leggings for recovery.

Skins and 2XU have anatomical crotch space which are more comfortable than the 'castrati' cheap stuff out there!

Skins filed bankruptcy so you can find their stuff for cheap right now. And it‘s really worth it to invest in some skins compression shorts.

Really?!? I guess not expanding into other things and the cheapness of UA et al just killed them. So glad I bought spare A400s last fall.

Unfortunately, google it. Soon there will be no skins compression wear anymore.

Haha So long as there is 2XU and Sub Sports. It's really about the compression and those brands do as good a job. I use compression only after a long day for recovery and not every time I exercise.

The theory is that they keep your muscles from vibrating, so you won't tire as easily. That's also why swimmers use very tight suits (that, plus there is some friction advantages with them).

At 58 I started wearing compression shorts every time I work out with weights, run, or play tennis and I find that they help with recovery and make me feel more comfortable when exercising in general.I wear Addidas, Nike, under armour and Reebok and the Addidas I fell are the best and most cost efficient. Nike and Reebok are not as tight.
