Connery and Ferguson surprise Murray.

Thought this was a moving and great show of support from Sean Connery and Alex Ferguson surprising him and reminding Murray how incredibly proud everyone in Scotland is. And of course Britain. And how we are all willing him on here.
If Murray were to win the slam it would be such a massive sporting achievement for a small non tennis nation like Scotland.

It will only be impressive if he beats Djokovic in the final. Otherwise it will have been a total cakewalk.

... at least Sir Alex enjoys a company of someone who understands what he is saying (because of his Scottish accent).

Federer's would have been tough: Verdasco-Berdych-Murray-Djokovic.

Djokovic's was a joke, I don't even want to talk about it.

If Wawrinka hadn't retired, and Ferrer not been tired, the last half of Djokovic's draw could have been tough.
Wawrinka , DelPotro then Ferrer.
Djokovic's compatriot Tipsarevic certainly did his friend a big favour tiring Ferrer out in that gruelling 5 setter.

As opposed to the epic first Slams Federer, Nadal and Djokovic won? I mean Philippossis, Puerta and Tsonga are three of the best players of all time obviously.

People often forget this.

These big 3 got up and running by defeating good but not great players.

Murray has never played anyone bar Djok or Fed in the final.

He definitely has it way tougher.

I agree with actually. Fed, Nole and Nadal all played joke material in their first slam finals. Murray has to play multi-slam champions in his finals.

Yes but some had to beat top 4 on route to the final.
I don't get this who you play in the final matters stuff.
Murray simply ran out of steam reaching his first 3 finals in addition to Fed and Djoker playing well.
Played well in his 4th outing but not good enough.
Winning a slam is also about your story over the whole tournament and how well you preserve energy at 7 x 5 set matches.

I am Scottish in descent, and my grandmother told me of wonderful tales from the bonny land, and some heinous treatment by the British.

I am surprised I don't see a lot more of this type of open support from hardline Scots, the abuse they suffered for centuries rivals that of the North American Indians by factions of the US government. Or Black Slaves by factions of the US people.

Anyways, I really like Djokovic AND Murray, so despite being Scottish in descent, I hope for a good match, and perhaps, a close fought win by Murray.

I think this year has been fantastic for Murray anyways. Winning the Olympics in England was huge for him, and I feel he has finally gotten the respect from fans universally that he is a very special and unique player. And getting the very special Ivan Lendl to coach him says volumes about the appeal of a Murray, because Lendl has a lot of personal interests.

Sorry Bjorn - but I think your Grandmother might have embellished and dare I say it, amended Scotland's history - the last couple of sentences in particular are pretty far off the scale of wrong.

Braveheart was not a documentary.

If he's referring to the horrendous treatment of the Highland clans after Culloden then he's actually not too far off the mark.

I do like Braveheart, really entertaining. But yes, it's pretty much a fantasy film in terms of historical accuracy.

Sorry - the clearences happened over a period of a couple centuries - and were about Scot moving Scot. The worst came after the early 1820s - some 70 years after Culloden - which also wasn't about English oppression.

Nadal defeated Federer in RG 2005 and Djokovic did the same in AO 2008.

Do you know who Tsonga beat in the 1st round of AO 2008??

Clearances were nothing compared to the attempt to wipe out the Highland race and culture right after Culloden.
After the battle there were many atrocities, torture and killing of injured soldiers by the British army, ****, ethnic and cultural cleansing (they made sure they brought up some nice characters from the south) attempt to wipe out Highland and Gaelic culture by banning the kilt and use of language.
Hey even in my father's day they got belted for speaking Gaelic in class.
A slight hangover from the past but signifies the determination to erase them from the face of the earth.

The point is they were Scottish Soldiers - the Black Watch was a Scottish regiment. You're right - it was about religion and culture, but it wasn't an England v Scotland thing - oh and for the record, nobody is saying it was right.

I was told that if Andy wins this today, Sean Connery will personally talk to the Queen about knighting Andy. and Sean who is a knight already may present the sword to Andy himself in the Palace.
