Customizing racquets that are too heavy..!!

I have always loved the feel and stability of heavier racquets like the rf97, Vcore 330, old vcore 95D. My ideal specs are around 335g, 7pt HL and max 325sw. The struggle has always been between "wanting to play with these frames" vs "Can i sustain the level for 3 sets".

With that in mind, i decided to start my own little project where the entire focus was to reduce static weight and SW by stripping the paint of these heavier frames and see how close i could get with my spec.

Project 1 - Yonex vcore 95D
- Outcome
- Static weight (without grip) - down from 310g (stock paint) to 297g (painted)
- Swing weight (strung, leather grip, overgrip) - down 325-327 to 317
- Process
- the racquet was stripped of paint till you could see the carbon and graphite (the weave looks so beautiful!!!).
- Repainted it matt black
- Put the grommets on
- Wrapped a stretched TW leather grip 3/4 the way up
- Overgrip all the way
- 4g total from 5th cross down.
- Final Specs strung
- New - 334g, 32cm/7pt HL, 322SW
- Old - 352g, 31.5cm, 334SW - (Full leather grip, overgrip, 4g lead)

Did i find what i was looking for?
- During match play @ ALTA AA1 - i won all my matches after the switch, all going 3 sets!
- I am so happy with the results, i am currently doing the same thing for 3 more 95D’s

Once i wrap those up i will try this with a Wilson RF97, its way to easier to get the grommets for this frame!

You stripped the paint off a 95d.

How did you strip the paint?

I’d love to know the finer details of how you did it. Considering doing this with my ezone 98+, which has a swingweight that’s a little too much for me to handle

Would also like to see photos. And also to hear more about the paint stripping process and the type of paint used to repaint it.

a few key things for me
- make the paint stripper do the work!
- dont go below 350 grit on the sandpaper
- take your time, dont hurry and be patient.
- very light coats of paint

I followed steps from other posts on TW.

At least you had spare 95D grommets. Did it vibrate much, as the stock paint seems to dampen vibes?
I have 8 95D's..lol and 9 sets of grommets! To me this is the holy grail of tennis racquets and i really want to use them, so i am doing whatever it takes. :)

So i did notice a difference in the stiffness between the frames! The painted frames feel softer (less stiff) and maybe more flexible (not sure on this one tbh).

Ive been playing with them side by side, as you can see i left 1 stock.

Check out the custom blue 95D i designed to match my E93 M3, thanks to Curtis from customtennisracquets

Here are some after pictures!!

These look amazing! But just so I understand, CTR painted the blue one, or you also did that one at home and just used their design as "inspiration"?

I’m going to sound stupid but can’t you just sand it down and then put some clear coat?

How do we know how much to sand? I’ve got a Dremel tool and some bits and wanted to try this without buying new tool

Decided to partake in this science experiment. I have an Ezone 98 plus extended to 28" by R*NY that was too heavy and collecting dust, so I put pain stripper on it and started sanding it down last night. Will post pics once I get it down to the graphite.

Roman stands by the 28” whiteout. I think it’s exclusive to them for now. I was curious but I think in the 16x19 that thing should be a rocket launcher lol

Whoah. Is he getting it 28" from Solinco or customizing it himself?
It’s a 28” model. Seems like a discrepancy between sales and Roman. Roman says it’s done rep told me it’s in the works. Roman last time I saw him said it was for his exclusive sale. It’s available to demo and buy at the shop. Looks crazy weird with the narrow ish head shape haha

I just spoke with RP over the phone. So, they are the 16x19, they come stock 28" from Solinco, and the specs are matched to the regular 16x19 xtd. 298 SW unstrung. I'm salivating.

RP sells a 28" whiteout?
Yup

Did he say they are exclusive to his shop? I need to call my rep to see if I get access to one. I like Roman but I can’t spend retail on a whiteout knowing I got a package from solinco haha

Bummer. Maybe I’ll just demo it. Or extend my current 18x20 to 28”

Have you thought of trying the Wilson sw102? I have the sw104 28” and I’ve used the old blade 104 27.5 and I think 28” is too cumbersome, actually think 27.75 would be perfect.

Not particularly interested in 100sq in and up. Tbh I’m not that interested in 28” for actual play either. I personally think 27.25 is ideal length. Just enough to give that extra free power but not so much it’s hard to maneuver

Hehe, I watched a lot of Naruto growing up in India. I too am a big fan of the Uchiha clan. Itachi and Obito in particular. I even have a shirt of Itachi, and am quite happy when someone else recognizes it ;)
Btw, you've a beautiful car and even lovelier racket paintjob .

Got the 28" WO today. It honestly feels kind of heavy even unstrung. I have low hopes of this ending well...
