Swiss wont choose Fed's worst surface. Most likely it'll be grass or hard. Hewitt would have a much better chance v Fed on clay than any other surface. He'd still lose, but it wouldnt require an injury to Roger for him to win 2/10 v Fed on clay the way it would on other surfaces.

What makes you think that clay is Fed's worst surface? If anything it's Hewitt's worst surface. Fed could play on ice if he needed to and still whip Hewitt or anybody else. You are aware that Fed grew up playing on clay right?

Doesn't matter - if Federer plays then he will rip apart the Aussie team on any surface.

Hewitt made a start in his last match against Federer. I think this time Hewitt will continue to attack. Clay is probably the most unnatural surface for Hewitt. It seems that Federer has spoiled us with his performances at the other slams. Last time I checked, he had a better than decent claycourt season this year on any terms. I believe he won a Masters title on the red stuff and reached the semis of Roland Garros.

lol, that guy must have made a typo, it's as follows:

Argentina vs. Sweden - Argentina has the choice of ground
Austria vs. Croatia - Austria has the choice of ground

The U.S. has a pretty nice draw, at least if either Chile loses or we play them at home. I would expect a France v. U.S. match-up in the semis, and I almost think that we could take them on clay even if it was away.

I agree. The US has a preety easy draw compared to Australia. I would imagin that the US will reach the semi's with not much.

Australia how ever has a really hard draw. First to play Switzerland obviously. Then I imagin that if Australia beat switzerland (its possible) Australia will play Spain who has an easy first match. Then if the aussies beat spain then they will probably play Croatia, Argentina or Sweden in the Semi's.

Who says Fed is going to play Hewitt? The Aussie team might put Hewitt as 2nd singles.
Fed wins 1st sigles
Hewitt wins 2nd.
Doubles is up in the air
Hewitt wins reverse
Fed wins Reverse
Comes down to the doubles...

Here's the fatal flaw in this logic. The following two statements are incompatible with each other since a match can have only one winner.
Hewitt wins reverse
Fed wins Reverse

if the united states doesnt get choice of surface against Chile...its gonna be 1 and done. Let's not get all excited about playing france in semis....they wont have a shot against any team on clay...some people hgere have them in the final already just cause they have to play Romania first round.....
they will not beat france nor chile on clay..
bottom line..not with roddick and blake and ginepri..
those three are like college players on clay

Roddick beat Grosjean 6-2 6-2 last time they played on clay in the Houston final if I'm not mistaken. I can see the talent with Gasquet, and he'll be tough, but I think the U.S. beating France in France could be done. Of course, if the US gets home against either Chile or France, we will be fairly big favorites, especially if recent U.S. Open standouts Dent/Ginepri/Blake continue to play excellent tennis on hard courts.

If the US plays France, it will be in the US(since last time it was in France). Not sure with Chile, don't think they've ever met. I actually hope they play Chile in Chile, the crowds there are like soccer crowds. It would be pretty intense atmosphere.

Federer has absolutely no problem with clay. He did semis in the FO. He will win no matter the surface. Is I was the Swiss captain, I would choose surface according not to Federer's best, but according to #2 player's best. The doubles match could be unpredictable, so favoring their #2 player is a good idea. You've got the two singles Federer's points almost for sure, so, why choosing grass just because is Federer's best surface? They don't need to do that, and grass won't favour their #2 player against Australia. I think it will be on clay, too. Let's see.

I agree US has a nice (not easy) draw, specially when comparing with the crazy other half of the draw (Spain! Argentina! Australia! Switzerland! Sweden!... this Davis Cup will be very nice to watch). But look out, Chile won't be easy specially if they play on home. The Chilean team will be very solid playing on clay. And of course the French won't be much easier.

Argentina, I think, will play on home and choose surface on almost all rounds if I'm not mistaken. That would be a HUGE factor, as they will play on clay and will have the support of a fanatic crowd. There is a frenzy in Argentina for winning the Davis Cup. If they play local on clay, they will be very, very tough to defeat. I'll pay much attention to the Argentinians.

And for my own country, Spain has a very tough draw. The positive side is that my fellow Spaniards rise and plays their best against the biggest teams, while they seem to not concentrate properly when playing "middle teams". As usual, their toughest test will be if the rival team choose Grass as surface.

Better watch what you say. That Barry guy might come complaining that davis cup organizers rigged the draw to give Roddick an easy road to the finals. Australia will have to rely on Arthurs to win 2nd singles to get a chance on doubles. And, assuming Spain wins, a Spain-Switzerland/Australia quarter would be nice. We'll see next year. Until then COME ON Ljubicic!

Isn't Wawrinka'a best surface clay? He took out James Blake at the French and lost a four setter to Puerta.

Yes, I think they'll choose clay because it favors Wawrinka, specially playing against the Aussies who will have trouble with that surface.

It's unbelievable how surface becomes such a huge factor in Davis Cup.
