Decreasing grip size

Hi all,

I tried searching but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I just bought my third Head touch MP (not the graphene) and I thought my grip was 4 3/8. However, this third stick at 4 3/8 is noticeably bigger than my other two who have really old/worn grips.

I've used "thin" replacement grips, but it's still big. What's the thinking/process on reducing grip size out there? Thanks in advance.

How thin ? I just ordered a Tourna Pro Thin (1.25mm) replacement grip to replace a Babolat Skin Feel (1.60mm). I have 2x 4 3/8s and 1x 4 1/2. I'm hoping the Pro Thin on the 4 1/2 will make the grip close to the 3/8s with Skin Feels.

Thanks for the replies. Going backwards...

I currently put this grip on and it still feels too big.

perhaps try changing out the pallets?

I'd like more info on this...can I buy "thinner" pallets?

Two overgrips only

I recall doing this years ago and I think it gave me a blister. Do you currently do this?

Change the grips of the other two.

I think you're missing my point - I want my third stick to have a thinner grip - not to have uniform grips at all cost.

I have done two overgrips on many rackets. Blisters that's strange.. maybe thicker ones. Or two supergraps which i find comfortable.

the problem is, we do not know if you got a one off pallet where it does not meet spec or if the hairpin is too large. perhaps you can get a 1/4 pallet size installed. you can find them on the big auction site or order pallets from ****

Call me crazy, just change all three to the same replacement grip that you like. The goldilock grip
Then
sell the racquets and take a vacation...

Rackets 1 and 2 have smaller grips (which I prefer) than my third one. So, changing all three grips to the "same replacement grip" wouldn't solve anything. Why sell the rackets, i'll take them on vacation and throw them away instead.

You can buy replacement Head Pallets, in your case an L2 4 1/4 to be sure, which you can build up slightly with a thicker grip or overgrip if it is too small. The best part is that you can buy the regular TK82 regular shape or TK82S Speed rounder shape.

Damn yeah, there was a point that i was super-fussy about grip size, I can’t stand just a very minor difference of my rackets, affected my game greatly.

Now i don't give a damn.

New grips look and feel always bigger. You said that the other two are heavily worn out. So change them and squeeze all three proportionally. ;)

I have also used some high quality baseball grips ( they also come in a few different thicknesses) on some of my customized sticks. May not be for all hands...

I would try the Kimony thin leather grip and use the Wilson Pro Sensation overgrip. That should make it feel smaller than original.

Like someone mentioned above, I use two--sometimes one--overgrips without repalcement grip for larger grips than optimal, and I haven't experienced any blisters.

The Kimony thin leather grip is not tapered and the key is to wrap it not overlapped.

I'm in the same boat as OP.

On a couple of Babolats, I've ended up using just two overgrips, adding lead to the bare handle to make up for the lost weight. The handle is already filled with silicone and screws.

The Head frames will be an easy fix, I'll just replace the pallets to 1/8, and I can probably use the same Skinfeel grip and Wilson Pro overgrip. But I could potentially use a Tournathin instead of the Skinfeel if needed.

The Wilsons may be a bit tricky, Skinfeel without overgrip feels about the right size but I do need an overgrip cos it's less slippery. May end up doing just two overgrips there too, though that may end up smaller than I want.

Starting to appreciate why the pros are so particular about their grips that a lot of them use a custom molded handle.

When you wrap a replacement grip with no overlap, it comes out a little smaller. Also do the same for your smaller handles, but apply 2 layers of gauze tape on the pallet first. I find it easiest to take a strip of gauze 2x the length of an overgrip then overlap by 1/2 width as I wrap it. The gauze and the no overlap will cancel each other out on the smaller handles and you should get very close to the size of the larger handle with no gauze and no overlap. The gauze tape is not bulky but firm and you will be able to use the same kind of replacement grip for each racquet.

Another way to decrease the volume of a grip in your hand is by waiting a week after the first application, removing it, then wrapping it again tighter. When removing a grip, make sure the adhesive strip for the grip stays on it and doesn't stick on the handle.

i bought two of the touch MPs when they first came out. base grip size was noticeably larger. i think its a QC issue.

You can try sand

You can try reducing the pallet by sanding. If you take too much material maybe you will have to put some weight inside the buttcap to compensate and match the balance of the racquet.
