Define extension on fh, 1hbh, 2hbh

We hit both straight arm and bent arm strokes, how does that factor into extension.

What is the goal of extension? More solid contact?

Does a flat swing by definition have less extension than a low to high swing?

If you have a straight arm forehand then you have more (forward) extension than bent arm forehands. Sometimes straight arm forehands can get caught being bit late therefore won't be able to fully extend. Usually due to spacing, footwork, and timing issue. One handed backhand, I'm afraid won't work too well without good extension most of the time. Two handed backhand you can get away with not being fully extended.

Extension to me means reach, how early or far out from your body you can contact the ball. To me extension applies more so to straight arm forehands and one handed backhand.

You can extend on either flat or strokes with more arch. Low to high swing path to me is not really extension.

Admit it ... none of use know how to define what extension is in ground stroke follow through. It’s not just me this time. :D

For some reason the first thing I thought of when you said extension on the follow through was how straight / bent the arm is following contact.

Rafa keeps his arm fairly straight post contact.

Fed bends his elbow significantly post contact.

I feel Rafa’s is more natural because if I were to skip rocks on the beach I for sure ain’t gonna bend my elbow after contact no?
