Del Potro's future!!

The-Champ

Legend
Amazing performance from Juan Martin in the final. Federer may not have played his best but Del Potro stayed focused and showed why he will be a contender from now on.

The question is...what does the future hold for the 2009 US-open champ? The guy surely has many weapons in his arsenal but he is too tall and runs around a lot. Can anyone name a player as big/tall as DelPo who has dominated the game in the past? I know Krajicek and Stich were tall and were very injury prone, and Delpo is bigger and has a more taxing game.

Do not bash Rafa or Federer in this thread pls!

Del Potro is good on every surface and is a contender in every major... He has plenty more major titles in him.

That 110 MPH forehand cross court that he hit... AMAZING!

He will never win Wimbledon but he will a big contender for the Australian, French, and U.S Opens for many years to come.

I don't know if he'll ever figure out grass, but he's a threat at the other 3, no doubt.

Unlike other tall players, this guy is DIAMOND solid from the baseline. He'll stand back there and trade ground strokes all day.

When I first saw him last year, I wasn't even remotely impressed. His groundstrokes didn't have a lot of pace and his serve was flat and slow.

I continued to think he was a pretender after watching Federer destroy him at the Australian Open (6-3 6-0 6-0). I thought not only did it show he really wasn't that good a player, but it proved he was a quitter as well.

But instead of being shell shocked from that loss, he improved ENORMOUSLY afterwards. He's a sneaky guy...he must have a burning desire in him that he doesn't wear on his sleeve and he must have worked his ass off in response to that humiliating defeat.

So now he has a big serve, he has the potential to blow you off the court with his forehand, he's rock solid from the backhand side and can take anything in the middle of the court down the line for a winner.

His only real weakness is his movement. That's the way to beat him...there's only so much he can do before his long legs give out. You've got to run him around, and Federer tried some of that...but the cooler conditions and smart energy conservation from Del Potro allowed him to come through in the 5th set.

He is a freak of nature. If Nadal is a cheetah, Del Potro is a guerrila.

Unlike most ball bashers, hes consistent from the ground, and knows how to pick his spots. He also moves like hes a good 4 inches shorter. And looking at how he won the 4th set against Fed spinning in his serve, imagine how good hell be when hes blasting it like he did in DC and Montreal.

I think this is horrible for del Potro's career. Being 20 years old and having your first major be at the US Open against someone who's often considered the greatest tennis player of all time? Does this scenario ring any bells for you guys??!?

For all your n00bs, I'm referring to Marat Safin. All del Potro needs to do is accept an appearance on the Letterman show and it's all over for his career. Once again, for you n00bs out there, go to youtube.com and search for David Letterman and Marat Safin interview after being Sampras.

Great job del Potro!!

A 'guerrila' looks more like some jungle soldier. I think you meant to say 'gorilla' :p

Hewitt did the same thing. Roddick won it at 20 too but against a not so great opponent

I wouldn't say Juan Carlos Ferrero was a "not so great" oponent at the time, especially that year having won the French and I think at the time was ranked number 3 in the world? Certainly no Roger Federer or a Sampras. In any case, I'm mostly just poking fun at the parallels. Hewitt also went on to win only one more major just like Safin! Oh no!

I hope del Potro fulfills his potential and wish him great success in the future :)

Once Del Potro develops a net game like Mac mentioned during the match he's going to be VERY hard to beat.
