Del Potro needs a better serve

First off. Congratulations to Djokovic. His overall consistency and amazing defence got him this victory.

Now, between a guy who is 198cms tall and one who is 188cms tall who is more likely to have a better serve? Obvious rhetorical question, but how come Delpo doesn't have a better serve!?

The stats are truly baffling. Over a 5 set match on grass Del Potro hit 4 aces. 4 bloody aces. Djokovic on the other side served up 22 aces and had 27 % better stats on his 1st and 2nd serve points won overall compared to Del Potro.

This is simply not good enough from Del Potro. I do understand he's facing one of the best returners of the game, but the likes of Berdych, Isner and Federer has served more aces and overall much better and efficiently against Djokovic before.

Del Potro I felt was the better from the baseline today. Djokovic' serving won him the match. Had Delpo had a better serve he would have won today; and not only that, he would be a serious contender for each slam outside clay.

He needs to work on movement, be in as good shape as djokovic, Murray, and Nadal, and Ferrer. Ditto for Berdych.

Actually he moves incredibly well for a guy that big and his wingspan compensates for lack of acceleration and speed. So his movement is as good as it gets. I agree with him having to up his fitness. Still not on par with a Djokovic/Nadal.

He had a better serve prior his left wrist injury and his lay-off. I recall at RG he was having one minute clocked serve games. I wonder if it went worse, or if the other players return better. His footwork is rather fine for a tall guy IMO. Well, yes he's no Janowicz, but he doesn't move like Isner either for example.

I don't. think his movement is as good as it gets. He's only 3 inches taller than Murray but moves way worse/

I don't like going by aces as a measure of how good someone's first serve is. The measure should really be a combination of aces, plus forced return errors, plus service points won on an easy second put away point. That's a truer measure. Some guys just tend to get aced easier than others.

It's easy to forget how Djokovic is one of the greatest returners of this generation. For all we know Djokovic could have touched but not actually returned 20 balls that were near aces. Over a 5 set match, though, 4 is startlingly low.

^^^ There must be a reason why a strong server such as JMDP only hit 4 aces - maybe the knee was bothering him. Perhaps the result would have been different with if he were 100%.

Actually I was surprised to see his movements even with the troubled knee. Only problem was his ROS and UE at critical time.
