Difference between Genuine Fans and Obsessive Fanboys...

What was the message boards like when Pete and Andre were going head to head? Was it as bad as this? I'm just wondering.
This is an interesting question posted in another thread. It's about the silly on-going feud between Fed and Nadal fans, as compared to those during the Sampras-Agassi era. I thought I rather start a new thread on this.

I remember things (in this board) were more "civilized" and mature back then. There were many Sampras fans, as well as those who supported Agassi and Rafter. Many of them were genuine fans, who would get into the occasional squabble, but were generally decent and light-hearted in nature. Flame wars was inevitable when things got out of hand, but not as frequent and disruptive as what we have seen today. The average fan was also more level headed. I guess the average age in this board was older then.

Currently, some of the Fed/Nadal fans in this board are just obsessive fanboys. They will go all out just to prove their idol is the best. They will "put down" anyone who doesn't share the same idol-worship as him/her. For example, there's one particular Fed fanboy (you know who you are) who would resort to habitual name-calling in most of his anti-Nadal arguments. Is it so sacrilegious when someone says "Nadal will beat Fed (or vice-versa)" or "Fed/Nadal got no backhand", it instantly demands a rebuttal or name-calling? Get a life, fanboys.

So here's my parting shot. True, you fanboys may love Fed or Nadal to bits and do anything to elevate your hero. But alas, Fed or Nadal doesn't even know who you are (fact #1), less give a **** about you (fact #2).

that's true.

Federer and Nadal do't know who I am???? I don't believe it. I'm shatterered. Pfffff on both of them.

I really do think that Marat knows who I am, though

LOL

I just have a problem with the word fanboy.

I think you should spell it with the internationally accepted Avril Lavigne affectation.

Let's just go ahead and say FANBOI and be done with it.

Better yet, I'm about to design a ceiling fan emoticon and use 'boi' as its suffix.

bismark: amen. well said.

vive le beau jeu, pound cat: oui!

sliced backhand compliment: "internationally accepted Avril Lavigne affectation" -- sweeet! lol

There are a lot of obsessive fanboys (or fangirls) on this board, that's true. I think a way to spot them is by the variety of their posts.
If someone only ever posts or starts threads about one player in particular and never posts about the other players or about other interesting tennis related things, then they are likely to be an obsessive fanperson and not really a genuine tennis fan (examples: Simon Cowell, VamosRafa). People who get involved in all kinds of tennis discussions about a variety of different players and matches are likely to be the genuine TENNIS fans.

Great post, Bismarck.

Very accurate observation, Rhino.

I think you've got it backwards. Fan is thought to have derived from fanatic, so the obsessive fanboys are the ones that act more like the intended meaning. Doesn't mean we have to like it though.
