Djokovic should retire

Full disclosure, huge Djokovic fan. I feel he gets so much unfair hate based on him simply being an odd, quirky guy from an Eastern European country. It must have been very difficult to lose in front of his son, who is now playing tennis and a fan of the sport. I felt really bad for him when he started crying. When he said "We can all be together and love each other", I thought who would say something like that? He was so open and so pure. I think it may be hard for Djokovic to retire now, because he wouldn't want this to be the last match his son saw or maybe he wouldn't want to teach his son to be a quitter. Here are my reasons why he should retire, in no specific order:

- Most grand slams ever, unless Nadal wins 2 more this record will stand a very long time
- The media and tennis establishment doesn't love him, so why sacrifice any more time for them? If he retired now, they would not speak of him as the greatest. Does he really want to try and add one or two more when he already has the most in hopes they will all come around? I say they are not worth it. If he is going to keep going it has to be for him only. It is time to stop trying to earn everyone's love.
- He will need to double down to beat Carlos. The old bag of tricks doesn't work on Carlos, so he would need to take his fitness, footwork, shot making to an all new level. Is he really prepared to go there?
- He is very healthy right now, meaning he can really enjoy his family and money with the body of a younger man. If he tries to take it to 6th gear at age 36, he may end up needing an invasice procedure on his knee, hip or something else. We all know that Djokovic prefers natural health remedies, so it really worth it to risk needing a major surgery?

I would love to see the guy stay on the tour. I would love to see him come back and with the US Open, but if he were to stop now, I would understand.

Finally.. an original thread. Great to see innovative and thought provoking ttw folks sharing their ideas with such threads.

This is what retirement looks like. No way Djokovic is going down that path.

It wouldn’t shock me to see him retire in the next two years. A lot of people are stuck on this playing til 40 thing and none of his comments in interviews give me that impression. If anything it seems he wants to spend more time with his family.

Especially as Alcaraz asserts his dominance in the rivalry, why would he stick around to continuously receive beatings from the young phenom? No, I think he’ll want to retire on top.

I'm confident Djokovic isn't mindf*ing this the way most of the people around here are.

It's kind of laughable this presumption Djokovic plays for adulation from the fans. Did you see the mock crying?

I expect this and several iterations of it immediatly following Djo's embarrassing loss, like has been done with Fed and Nadal. Just that, Fed and Nadal fans have a bit more class I guess and gave it a days grace for Djo fans to lick their wounds.

You have no idea to what lengths he can and will go. He reduced your heroes to second and third status because of his determination, he will go the extra mile to get some wins over Alcaraz too.

By the time he is done, you will either stop watching Tennis or you will be on his side.

Think about it... He has the most GS and he also still has his original knees, hips, and feet plus over 100MM. He already won, to keep going is to lose.

He said he will play as long as nadal plays. No way he quits now when there is only alcaraz around to stop Nadal as you can guarantee if Nadalmplays on he is in it to win slams not some mushy farewell tour.
Dont overreact. Djokovic lost. It happens. Takes a a couple of days to get over then its forgotten and time to look forward. Us open is next.

The biggest defeat for the Serbian player is missing: The final of the Australian Open 2024.
There he can retire calmly.

He's not going to retire until he's sure Nadal is retired. Novak wants to be certain Nadal doesn't touch his GS record. If he sees Nadal next year struggling and retiring at the end of the year, i can see Djokovic retiring at AO 2025, maybe even end of 2024 calendar year(USO, for example).

2024 French Open is going to give a lot of answers about Djokovic and Nadal retirements.

Pet Slams are the first to arrive and the last to leave for the Big 3. The world world was saying Wimbledon would be the last to fall for Novak but my gut feeling told me that AO will be the last to fall for Novak. He will beat Alcaraz at AO24 probably for the last time or will again win AO25. That slam will be the last to fall for him just like RG for Nadal and Wimbledon was for Roger (he did not win W last but reached the final and came within points of winning) .... Djoker will beat Alcaraz at AO come what may if he is fit.

I am a fan of pro tennis providing entertainment for me. I couldn’t care less about any of the reasons cited in the OP. I care about the art and not the artist.

So, I don’t want Djokovic to retire until he stops being a threat at the late stages of tournaments. Hopefully there are even better matches between him and Alcaraz in store for us now that he fully realizes how mentally tough the kid is.

Not to forget he made you ditch Federer for him.

djokovic is about as optimized a player as there ever was. there aint no more tweaking going to happen at 37.

look, Carlos will be 21 next year. djok 37. if you think father time has retired you're wrong.

Yeah but I never ditched Federer.

I stood by Federer right until the point he was no longer the outright slams leader, our duty was to defend Federer when he was ahead even in the days when he was ranked 3 in the world but was the slams leader, so we did that, however the day he lost the record he was dethroned and it was time to move on. I cannot dwell in IFs & BUTs, Career Inflation, Time Travel theories which are all laughable nonsense, so I pushed Fed to 2 or 3 in my rankings and accepted Djokovic as the Topper. I live in reality, not in a dream world and I value mental toughness a lot as well.

Joker is embarrassing himself, he should retire. Making the final of a grand slam is embarrassing. All of us on TTW would have completed the calendar grand slam and not embarrassed ourselves. We also would have won the 100m race at the Diamond League Meet. Joker, you need to meet our expectations and stop choking like a little baby.

Just because you closely follow the public life of someone famous, it doesn't mean you know the person closely enough to have an idea of what key life decisions would be best or them. The well-intentioned "they should retire" advice is not necessarily offensive, but it's quite patronizing. You think that you know better than the person themself as to what's better for them, when you don't even really know the person.

He's still in slam winning form (won it a month ago). He'd practically have to be lobotomized to retire when the lead is only 1, and Nadal looming next year.
Nadal is aiming to win Olympic gold in Paris (the format favors players his age) but unless he plays at a high level at RG 2024, it will be very difficult for him to win another Major.

There’s lots of discussions but still no conclusion. We need to provide a decisive answer to Novak.
He’s waiting for this thread to tell him what to do next..

He still has 2nd best chance to win slams after Alcaraz. If Djokovic should retire because he cannot beat Alcaraz, so should all the other players behind him on rankings.
