Do parents make good ATP pro coaches?

On the affirmative side, we have, for example, Connors' mother, the fathers of Agassi, Serena and Venus, Marat Safin, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova (actually her stepfather) & Nadal's uncle Tony (ok, he's just the uncle). On the negative side: the fathers of Marion Bartoli ,Bernard Tomic, Jennifer Capriati, Mary Pierce and Donald Young's mother and father.

Agassi's father could be put on both sides as his harsh training made Agassi one of the best players at taking the ball early, on the short hop, but made him hate tennis in the bargain.

Of course, Connors and Agassi went on to have other coaches who were influential.

Folks on the negative side were blamed for pushing their kids competitively when they were too young or various types of abusive or unsportsmanlike behavior.

Could the answer be something more than yes or no?

Parents are just like any other coaches some are better some are not. Am sure the success rate is similar to any other coach. There are advantages and disadvantages to being a parent coach and some peoples advantages could be disadvantages and vice versa its such a personal and circumstantial thing.

I would say early junior years parent coaches are probably better as they are around them much more and can shape and influence their overall habits and lifestyle to tennis. But even that depends on the pupil.

Gloria Connors was a great coach for Jimbo, she helped make him an ATG.

Mike Agassi was never Andre's coach. Andre's first coach was Bollettieri when he was 13. Mike was his parent and semi-brutal trainer, not his coach.

Richard Williams certainly was a successful component of Serena and Venus' development and both seem to still love him and have him in their lives.

Safin was coached by his mother if I am not mistaken, and only young age.
then trained in Barcelona in an academy.

Tsitsipas and Shapovalov to an extent brought and still coached by parents.

To summarize - it is possible, but rarely.

Sometimes, these parents are not really coaches. They use real coaches and just ferry kids from place to place.

They usually have clashes with each other and can sometimes lead to them having major issues with each other for a long time
