Does anyone put wax on there natural gut strings?

I was reading the article about natural gut that TW has and it said something about putting wax on your strings after every use to extend string life.

Do any of the users on here do this? If so what wax do you use (candle wax, car wax, ???) and do you just apply it to a piece of cloth and rub it all over the strings?

Thanks for replies

If it matters, I always use white candle wax ony my gut-but only before I string- not after every use, as you asked. I simply rub the candle along the length of the string and I do think it helps- keeps the string from knotting and or getting kinked. VS Gut/16g

I used to use wax to help reduce friction when pulling the crosses, I don't use it anymore. I don't think the current crop of premium guts need it. Some of the uncoat might still benifit...

never hurts to put some on the mains before stringing the crosses. i have an old soft candle that i use. just one other way to avoid notching the mains when pulling the x's.

I don't use it while stringing any more. I figure the risk of it getting on the clamps and causing slippage is greater than the risk of burning or notching the string while weaving the crosses. Almost all strings are coated now and they are less delicate than they used to be. Of course, using good technique by fanning the crosses while pulling them through helps. I do us baby oil on the strings once they are in. Nothing wrong with using wax either. This helps to protect the string once the coating starts to wear off.
