You are running marathon faster than 20 years old top marathon runners? Or top 20 years old iron man athletes?

You know that 20 years old can be keyboard warriors and can be top level athletes and there is a universe between them?
The fact that I defeat some 30-35 years old weekend warriors in tennis doesn't mean that I'll have a chance to win a point from Nole or Rafa
No but the question was whether he could improve his condition and stamina to keep up with the others. And yes, he could vastly improve his endurance from what it was at Wimby. His playing and tactical skills haven't gone anywhere. He's just rusty and not fit enough to keep his level long enough.

40 isn't so old that he couldn't get into phenomenal shape.

The scope isn't to get into phenomenal shape for a 40 year old.

It's to get into shape to compete against 20-30 year olds during 7 matches in best of 5 inside 2 weeks.

He might beat the first 2, then the tank will get dry because a 40 year old cannot match the recuperation rate of a 20 year old.

While the touranment gets into the later stages, the 20 year old gets accustomed to the game and plays better, while the 40 year old is running on it's last fumes.

the question is whether the knee would hold up,

Well, it worked alright for Murray's hip, didn't it ?

No, that's not the question.
Question is if he can bring his conditioning to the level where he could compete with top tennis players? Including Djokovic
And the answer is at 40 with multiple surgeries it's unlikely that he'll be able to grind a full tennis season

I've seen almost every Federer match since 2002. Can you name matches that Fed lost where he was clearly exhausted or lost stamina (prior to him being almost 40 in 2021)? I can name only two: 2009 AO final in the fifth set and the Millman match at the USO.
There are clearly more.
Loss against Dimitrov in five at US Open being just one of them...

Well, now is revealed that also Rafa was injured at RG. Pointless, since you get on the court it is supposed you're able to play and hope to win.

Is that mentioning an injury is hardly an excuse in a 5 setter. It looked good enough to win the 4th. But completely gased in the fifth.

I think this is (partly) a joke, but why should Mirka have a negative impact? She always was his biggest fan, as a person AND as a tennis player.

This. These people who think and say that people 40+ cannot be in extremely good physical condition must all be in their twenties or younger.
It is another thing being in great shape and another thing being able to compete with younger professionals who are in top shape. If you 're not fit at 25 or if you are fit at the level of an amateur athlete, you can improve your physical condition until you 're 40. But if you are already a top athlete at 25, there is no way your body will perform better at 40. Maybe you will find ways to do things in an easier and more effective way because of the experience gained, maybe you grow mentally but in terms of sheer strength and speed as a top tennis player you will have reached the limit of your abilities before 30.

Finally some common sense here.
I almost lost my hope in humanity

The old age excuse applies to footspeed, recovery, and fatigue in long matches - it does not apply here.

Disagree. Dude is pushing 40 and cardio capacity most certainly diminishes given equal work. Maybe he isn't working hard than he used to, but just working as hard will not always yield the same results as you age.

Federer was always known as a hard worker. I read that he used to out-work much younger partners in practice: they would tire out before he did.

But those days are gone. Now if he works too hard in practice, he won't have the stamina and legs for tournament tennis. If 40 year old legs are just as strong and fresh as 30 year old legs, players would never have to retire because of old age.

It’s a pick your poison scenario. If fed conditions more he’ll get injured. If he doesn’t, he’s technically as healthy as he can be, but in poorer shape.

judging by his soft, flabby physique, he never put a whole out of emphasis conditioning and strength training over the past decade that’s for sure. I don’t understand it as these guys have nothing to do but train and play tennis LOL. The last thing any pro player should have is beer guts and baby fat

he looks like he’s already accepted defeat at the hands of the other two guys and retirement. Well it’s his choice I guess. if I put in all those years and my life into the sport, I would fight to the death to fend nadal and djoker off if I was fed. Of course, I would tried to quit being stubborn early on in my career against nadal and djoker and go “ok im Not doing something right against these two, time to get some new input and figure this problem out”
