Does Nadal have a chance if all of his Wimbledon matches are under a closed roof?

Now that Centre Court at Wimbledon has a new retractable roof, what are Nadal's chances to repeat his title if all of his matches are played with the roof closed?

I say very slim.

Nadal has never done well in indoor tournaments on fast courts, such as Madrid (the old one, yes he did win it once), Paris, Shanghai, Rotterdam, etc.

So I think if he faces a hard flat hitter like Soderling that can put balls through the air fast and make it skid on the grass, Nadal will be in big trouble. Especially since Soderling specializes in playing on fast indoor courts although he even beat Nadal on the slow red clay of Roland Garros. Other hard hitters that could bother Nadal on a fast indoor court include Gonzalez, Karlovic, Berdych, Blake, Safin, Del Potro, Roddick, Tsonga, etc. and even Djokovic, Murray, and Federer.

What do you think?

Even though Wimbledon has a roof, the organizers have noted that they have worked very hard on the air circulation & conditioning units to avoid the buildup of moisture on grass...So if their air circulation system is very good, I don't know how much of a difference its going to make in the way the court plays...

nadal only won because he met a mono-stricken federer. it's
never happening again.

But even if the closed roof does not make the court surface any faster, the ball will still travel faster through the air due to the lack of any wind resistance. Big servers and guys with huge flat groundstrokes usually do well indoors for this reason. There's also no wind to affect the toss of big servers.

Yes you are right about that...But won't the roof be closed only when its raining and open normally?

Yes, it will only be closed when it rains or likely to rain imminently. But as soon as it's closed, no more wind and it becomes an indoor match. So if they have a lousy two weeks of weather in London during Wimbledon, I think Nadal is in big trouble.

first of all if it rains the play will be suspended for 30 to 45 minutes to adjust the conditions(wind, temp, humidity and light) so the roof will prevent rain and supply normal condition because if it acts like indoor courts grass will die by the end of the tournament

It's not the roof that is his main problem. Stephen Dawring from the All England Club said this:

"The changs you'll see this year will be more than just the roof, we've noticed that Centre court is much faster than it has been for almost a decade now, I think the players will notice that to."

If that's true, then we'll finally see if Nadal can win on 90's grass.

Can you imagine the riot that would take place on these boards if Ivo did actually win Wimbledon with just his serve!

That would be completely hypocritical. Everyone complained like crazy when Nadal won without serving and volleying for the entire thing pretty much. So I guess it would be a case of what do you want? Fast grass, so big servers do well or slower grass so that baseliners do well?

Of course he has a chance and I personally won't believe that the grass is up to its 90s speed until I see it with my own eyes.

I would tend to agree with this. It's really tough on me, Fedfans and I'm sure Fed as well, to have let what is now known as the greatest match in tennis history slip through his fingers. This should be in the dictionary under the word "tragedy". Especially bc Fed fought back from being down 2 sets to love. Had he won, not only would it have been the greatest match, but also the greatest comeback, in SPORTS history.

That loss hurt badly(very badly actually)no question but it's pure BS to discredit it because of Fed's mono.Fed was cleared of mono by Wimbledon, not to mention that he didn't lose a SINGLE set until the final so he was definitely in good form and playing great tennis,it's just that Nadal still got the better of him in the final in an epic match. That's it,no BS excuses.

The roof is made of glass (?) and is transparent so it lets sunlight through. Thus, I don't think the grass will be any worse off than without the roof.

Don't plants also grow in greenhouses?

The courts today are playing the slowest of all week. Stop with the whining.
Yep and did you see all the aces and winners in the Soderling/Gonzo match? This is not playing at a normal speed for a clay court. I'm free to whine if I want. Injustice these tournaments are doing to Nadal is despicable.

The new Wimbledon roof is translucent, not transparent. (Sorry to be so persnickety.)

Nadal is a washed-up nobody.

LOL! Seriously guys don't discount Nadal's chances this much. I mean he has made Finals in Indoor tournaments and such. Certainly the surface will suit others much more than Rafa but he knows how to adjust his game. THe factor I see in his way is the tendonitis in his knees that is keeping him from defending Queens and could hurt his Wimbledon chances.

So not only did the French Open get sped up but now Wimbledon is sped up as well? Thanks a lot.

Come on man! You sometimes make it sound like the whole world is against you. It's okay! Nadal is injured and when he comes back he will play well again.

Wait NF......So, if I get this straight you are saying that Rafa is not only a clay court specialist but a SLOW clay court specialist and it's a plot to speed everything up because Rafa is a SLOW CCS, is that correct???

Cheers, TennezSport

It's the god damned wind making the courts play faster, not the French tennis federation. Stop with the conspiracy crap, it's getting old. How can you whine about this, and then whine when people say that Nadal is one-dimensional. You're pretty much proving it.

Not only one-dimensional, but one very specific exact speed and bounce on one very specific exact surface.

Its not our fault or the tournaments fault if Rafa isnt able to play on any type speed of surface...shows his one dimensionality in that sense if he cant handle different court speeds

(I dont believe Nadal is one dimensional...but court speed is ********...if he cant cope with that, he's not a legit No.1)

So stop making lame excuses....fair enough, during the french against soderling he was probably injured, thats a FAIR excuse as was Federers mono at the Aussie in 2008....but court speed? Please
