does serving like Andy Roddick suppose to take a lot of energy?

i copy Roddick's service motion. Anyone does that too? Well, is that motion suppose to take a lot of strength? I have to use a lot of strength to serve hard. When I tried to be smooth, it goes slow. Is it the same for Roddick also?

Please don't tell me you mean his short takeback by his "serving motion."
I'm sick of this roddick takeback crap.
It makes no difference.
He just swings incredibly fast and puts hell alot of bodyweight into the ball.

You wanna serve faster? Swing faster. Don't put muscle into it.
You wanna serve better? Go for placement, THEN speed it up.

Jr. is absolutely right, however i will bet that Roddicks service motion is a good amount more stressful on the body than most guys on the tour. Because of the fact that he coils his knees and body so low and explodes into every serve, the big servers on tour besides him usually have a very relaxed low to high swing, i.e. Ljubicic, Ancic. Its obvious he exerts alot more energy than a someone like Federer.

i've given his service motion a try and definitely noticed it puts a lot of stress on the body and make my body sore all over. i did notice a little more power tho

Serving is all about rhythm, and Roddick's abbreviated motion makes it a little tougher to "generate" rhythm compared to a slow buildup like Sampras' serve; maybe that's the reason you feel it takes more energy.

Do you copy Roddick's motion simply because you like it? If so, I wouldn't suggest continuing with it - find your own serve, one that's comfortable to and for you.

His takeback makes no difference. He could still serve 150+ if he changed his motion. He's just a freak of nature(tm).

I don't see how it takes more energy. His motion is abbreviated, hence it takes LESS energy. Roddick's serve has the disadvantage of lacking disguise. Other than that, it's an incredibly energy efficient motion.

Its his takeback that gives him all his power...
It's his back flexibility, his incredible acceleration and racquet headspeed, and the tremendous uncoiling from his legs, exploding into the motion that gives him that power.

It's mechanic energy transfer at its best :)

And also, you see him scrunch his shoulder. Basically, instead of looping and picking up momentum to generate speed, all of his power is coiled in every part of his body and it all explodes at the same time.

Well i didnt think it through well but if he didnt have a good takeback all that energy would go to waste
