RUMA, Serbia (AP) -The father of tennis player Jelena Dokic was sentenced Thursday to 15 months in jail on charges that he threatened the Australian ambassador to Serbia.

Damir Dokic was found guilty of ``endangering the security'' of the ambassador in Belgrade and unlawful possession of weapons, which were impounded during a police search of his home.

Dokic was brought under police escort to the court in Ruma, a town about 30 miles northwest of Belgrade. He did not comment, but his lawyer confirmed the sentence to The Associated Press.

``The sentence is too high,'' Bosiljka Djukic told the AP. ``We were both left speechless.''

Djukic said she will appeal the sentence.

``I hope the higher court will undo this injustice against Damir Dokic,'' Djukic said.

Dokic was arrested last month after reportedly saying he would blow up ambassador Clair Birgin's car if she didn't stop negative articles about him from being published in Australia.

Jelena Dokic had given interviews to Australian media, saying her father had beaten her.

Dokic told Serbian media he would fire a rocket launcher at Birgin's car, but later said the statements were made in anger. He also has admitted having beaten his daughter.

Jelena Dokic, born in the former Yugoslavia, migrated to Australia with her family as a child and represented her adopted country at the 2000 Olympics.

She renounced her Australian ties in 2001 to move back to Serbia, then decided to compete for Australia again in 2006.

The 26-year-old Dokic, a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2000, is ranked No. 75 after a comeback at the Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.

^^ It's more along the lines of what he said. As far as I recall, I dont think that there were actually any weapons involved. Just threats made...

Don't quote me, I may- or may not, be wrong (i.e. about the lack of weapons being involved)...

He had many weapons, some he had licenses for and some he didn't, including 2 bombs he claims were souvenirs from the war.

The guy is a cracker and has mistreated Jelena for many years but 15 months for having a big mouth is a bit excessive.

He had no big weapons with him. A lot of hunting rifles and 2 bombs.

He got 10 months for threats and 7 months for weapons, which was then combined into 15 months altogether. Serbian media for the most part say it's too much, which it probably is.

He has bigger sins, though...

Hm, I actually read Djokovic instead of Dokic and my first reaction was relief...
On topic, 15 months solely for this reason are somewhat exagerrated, but as CountryHillBilly said, he has bigger sins. I guess this sentence suits him.
I hope Dokic is alright with this. Quite frankly, I don't think she cares that much for her father atm.

That stupid twit deserves it. One report said he had 2 HAND GRENADES with him at the arrest. He single-handedly ruins Jelena's career then he stockpiles weapons? The guy should get way more than just 15 months.

he threatened to kill the australian ambassador and he had in his possession the wherewithall to carry out his threat ... 15 months is a light sentence imho. only after he was arresed did he claim it was "only a joke"

I'd say there's a good chance he does something stupid while in prison and gets another charge added and more time...I would be scared to be anywhere that he MIGHT be...

^^^i doubt it too ... one of those youtube stories mentions that he could have gotten up to 3 years in jail, so since he obviously was found guilty of some of the charges, he's lucky to receive a tad more than 1/3 of that at 15 months ... I wonder whether he was that wealthy before elena became a tennis phenom.

It was surely only a matter of time before they put him in jail for something. I'm just glad it wasn't to do with abusing his daughter who fortunately for her seems to have managed to get away from him.

One of the tragedies of the Balkans is the ready availability of weapons that were stockpiled during the various conflicts in many homes. The fact that they only found hunting rifles and not the ever present AK47 or similar surprises me.

OTOH, one (or maybe both) of the stories mentions that they found "2 bombs," whatever that means.

From what I've found, he had a bunch of hunting rifles, but they were all with licenced. No AKs or anything.

But he was convicted for illegal possesion of 2 hand grenades and bullets for automatic rifle.

He is a Serb from Croatia and it's quite likely he got the bombs as a souvenir. Many other people have them, but they are still illegal.

So, basically it's 2 bombs and bullets.

Yeah I'm surprised it was so little. From what my friend who spent several years reporting out there tells me even know apparently it's very common for most people to have a weapon stashed in the room beams or the floor just in case. Still the man is clearly crazy.

Edit: That said I would imagine that if you raided many US houses you might find more weaponry than this.

Yeah, many people have a handgun, although they dont know what to do with them. And some have hunting rifles. There are of course various military and paramilitary veterans with piles of weapons.

Still, they dont have as much weapons as Americans, or even Canadians.

I have a feeling Jelena will feel more safe than ever before once her father is behind bars. Hopefully he'll pull some bonehead move and have his sentence extended. He deserves it.

He abused her (hit her etc), she has said as much in recent interviews. Whatever he gets, for whatever reasons, he deserves.

In regards to his wealth - someone asked - my understanding from reading is that they moved to Australia very poor, and that every cent he has could probably be traced to her in some way.

So here's the list of Mr Dokic's arsenal:

7 hunting rifles - legal
Beretta pistol - legal
2 hand grenades M-50 - illegal
Ammo for Magnum 357 - illegal

a- Unless one of the long guns chambers it, where's the 357 weapon?

b- Also, while I don't know if Mr. Dokic apparent psychiatric problems have been documented, where I come from, if they were, his possession of long guns would also be illegal.

c- While a baseball bat or a blender for that matter can be used as a deadly instrument, Mr. Dokic clearly had more formidable means, AND he threatened the life of a human being, evidently because of his title.

d- Me thinks that Mr. Dokic needed to be darted, tagged, de-clawed and either released to the wild or confined, some time ago.

On Wikipedia, it says that he's a war veteran. I haven't found any sources for that. It's probably not true. He escaped the war in Croatia in 1991, and his bombs are probably something he got from former fighters or paramilitaries. It's highly unlikely he actually purchased them from someone.

So, he's almost clear as far the charges for illegal weapons are concerned.
