Donald Young vs. Marin Cilic

Donald has some moment of flash but he is inconsistent! He just not ready yet for prime time. 3-6,2-6,0-3 so far.

Donald has a nice serve do the "T" but his serves are not consistant and double-faults too much. Commentators are being sarcastic too. I think Brad Gilbert could get Donald in the top 50 within a year or two however.

Cilic has 26 unforced errors to 22 for Young. Cilic though has 37 winners to 12 for Young. The match is not up to Young. Cilic has too much power for him.

I agree Young has a good serve at times but he needs to get that 1st serve in as his 2nd serve is awful.

If only Young got Proper Coaching....like alll the other young guys he beat before in the jr.tour.

At least if anything young should try to at least get into the seiours tour or else he mighting be join as an instructor at his parents academy!

To qualify to get into the seniors tour; you either have to be in the top 10 ranking sometime on the tour; be on a winning Davis Cup team or win at least one Grand Slam tournament.

That is pretty high qualifications IMO.

It seems Young is being held to a higher standard than the other young Americans though. Harrison who is already being touted as better than Young (not just more promising but better) went out meekly in straight sets to some nobody nowhere near the stature of Cilic and nobody is saying anything on him. Just saying.

Donald Young is being treated like the US version of Alex Bogdanovic, i.e. getting the vast majority of the slating for the lack of top national players because they had a lot of promise as youngsters.

Sometimes the pressure on young players is ridiculous. Just look at the German players. Anke Huber being touted by the German press as the next Steffi Graf which to anyone outside Germany was obviously a joke as she had nowhere near that kind of potential. Of course Huber went on to a wonderful career where she spent much time in the top 10 but because she paled in comparision to a 22 slam winner she was treated like a failure. Or Michael Stich who did even better than Huber, won Wimbledon, won a an ATP World Championships (over Sampras), reached #2 in the World, and showed amazing versatility by reaching a slam final on every surface, but was also touted as a dissapointment since he didnt live up to Becker's success. Then to top of the ridiculous, WTA journeywomen Marlene Weingartner was even called the next Steffi Graf coming up as a teenager. How ridiculous to set up a young player who is probably only top 50 potential to be rated against such unrealistic standards. Also Tommy Haas and Nicolas Kiefer both touted as the next Boris Becker coming up.

Young has yet to have a quality coach, talent down the drain.

That is the frustration here. No one expected him to be the next Agassi, but wow - the kid isnt even getting the chance to do so.

The commentator summed it up: he is still playing juniors tennis - everything is a mini drama.

So true. GROW UP and be a professional.

Something a coach would have taught.

Maybe not an Agassi, but maybe a Chang or even a Wheaton. It hasn't happened.
