Drills for High School Teams

I coach a high school tennis team and am looking for drills to do with my players. We do a double's drill called "Champs or chumps" where one team challenges the other and has to win three points in a row to become champs, but I need more drills and skill-specific ones as well. Anybody know any *non-subscription* websites with drills?

Are you looking for drills or games or both?

For drills, in HS, we would have one person feed low balls side to side and work on digging those low balls out. Really helps with knee bends. Basically, have one person sit on the ground with a hopper in front of them and have them feed underhand to a person on the baseline.

One of my favorite games was "Tap Tap", where you divide into doubles teams. You have both teams start at the net, and feed one team a lob. They have to work on passing the other team - if so, they run to the other side and are now "kings of the hill".

Both drills and games. Hopefully some ideas like you described that combine the two. Thanks SS. BTW which high school in MN? I was a graduate of Robbinsdale Cooper High School.

I graduated from Monticello - just outside of the 'burbs.

I've found that a lot of high school tennis players just need work on their groundies and some strategy, so basically, any ball machine/groundstroke drills will be helpful.

for doubles you can set each team in a certain position on the court and then feed a ball and have them play out the point. first to ten wins, then switch the positions.

for example, have one team at the net and the other at the baseline. feed the team at the net a lob, and then the point is on. of you could have both teams at the service line, feed in a ball, and have them volley until the point is won. no lobs.

there are tons of variations on games like that. how many kids are you coaching, and are you the only coach there? if so you sound shorthanded and might have to have some matches going while you work with certain kids, then switch.

To work on volleys and communication during doubles, our team plays games where each player is allowed to let the ball bounce once. So basically someone serves the ball and since the ball has to bounce on a serve, the returner can no longer take a ground stroke. They are forced to volley or let their teammate use their one bounce when ball is returned.

I posed the same question for ya on youtube...is another name for this game, "Around the World?"

Br

Um........ idk? I never heard of that name... but I guess it makes sense.

You basically just hit the ball once and then run counterclockwise to the other side of the court and hit it again.

If you mess up you get a letter..... spell OUT and your out!

Yeah, that's around the world, but with 3 strikes.
Rush and crush is a good drill
Though you probably already do that one

1. play a game to 21 where one player serves every point and only gets one serve on each point. Good drill for second serve and ROS on 2nd serve.

2. Have the kids play a set where neither player can score unless the ball is hit 4 times. (or 6 or 8) Serve, ROS, hit, hit, then the point starts. Matches at the high school level are won by the player that makes the fewest errors. This drill forces them to keep the ball in play a little longer.

I know you want a nonsubscription site but for $30 this is a steal.

You would do you and your team a huge favor for only $30 measly dollars. That is less then a cup of Starbucks a day for a month.

There are over 400 drills and you can develop practice plans along with that. Videos are available to watch how to do the drill.

Dont sell yourself or your team short. Join this thing.
