Emma Is The Most Marketable Player In History.

The big question is will she continue to win. Her results at Wimbledon and the USO this year are obviously a great sign, but when was the last time we saw a female player win consistently? It's rare. Let's say she has the talent -- will she stay motivated? I honestly get the sense that many female pros would rather make a living modeling than sluging it out on tour year after year. Even Osaka who, no offense, is not going to win fans based on her looks, is getting plenty of love from the sponsors and fashion media, so we know Emma has the potential to do much better with her looks. It's too early to judge whether the fake personality criticisms have any merit, but let's face it, the world by and large is very shallow -- if you're a pretty and sexy girl in general the world will love you, especially the men (shrug). But yes, if she can be a top 10 player she rake in the sponsors. And if she's top 3, fuhgeddaboutit. I expect the Nike's of the world to give her the same treatment that Sharapova got in her early years (remember that commercial "I feel pretty"?"

I'm so impressed by Emma's run as qualifier in this year's USO and by her poise and maturity. Downside for me now is that whenever I play I know that teenagers are capable of kicking my ass on the court, and I'm a 4.5... :( Well, lotsa ladies can kick my ass lol...

Her mandarin is decent for a 2nd gen. Her interview as an 11 year old was super cute with a lovely halting posh accent.

Naomi has a bigger burden to uphold being black and asian and having won multiple slams. She genuinely cares about social issues, and I think that is a big burden for her.

I'm glad that neither Emma nor Naomi have annoying grunts... angry cat, mating fox, angry lion sounds come to mind on the WTA lol...

I'm looking forward to watching Emma and Leyla battle more established players in future.

Borg was one of a kind, but Osaka definitely gives off her own aura. Definitely an intriguing and likable personality.

I never had a thing for Osaka.
Since her woke stunts and more recently her complaints about an allegedly mean press corps (while running after every dollar at the same time) I really dislike her and will root against her in any match (would even support good old Serena if they were ever to meet again).

Emma Raducanu - I think I'm in love and I might even cheat Steffi with her (for a short while only of course!). :p

I don't think Emma cares less.
Thankfully she doesn't seem to be a virtue signaler, she is most probably too humble for that.

My previous comment was not to compare the two necessarily, especially on social issues. After all, Emma is still only 18. Others talked about Naomi so I also commented...

Wait until I boo Naomi at the FO (if she plays there even though she sucks on clay).
We already brought Hingis to tears, so don't underestimate fans.

And Steffi was always very friendly towards fans.
That was one of many reasons she was so popular, easily the most beloved female tennis player of all time.
Raducanu is in the same mould, people just love players like her and Steffi.

Not yet more Marketable than Maria Sugarpova

When Sugarpova arrived in 2004 she took the Tennis world by storm as well and ruled for more than a decade as the highest paid female athlete

So the standards are very high for Emma to beat, it is not that easy, but not impossible if she wins a lot of slams, she will have to let her slams tally do the talking.

She will have to win more than Maria and with intervals to stay in the news, she very well can..... lets see

Overall and Federer and Sugarpova are the peak/ceiling of Tennis in terms of marketability among their respective genders !!!

Whoever has to become the most marketable has to beat them.

Sadly Maria has only 5 slams.
If he had 21-22 slams like Serena then she would have been greater than Serena because of her brand value.

If she appeals in England, she will be dead in the water in China.

U.S. Open champion. Will appeal to Canada as she was born in Toronto. Already a legend in her adopted England. She speaks Mandarin. So add another billion fanatical followers in China. Also speaks Romanian.

Her global appeal is unprecedented.

This is your new role model.

Raducanu has attributed her mentality and ethics to her role models, tennis players Simona Halep and Li Na (who are from countries of her ancestry).

I don't want to discourage Emma/to sound negative but on looks she cannot subdue Sharapova, hell nobody can, Maria is the absolute GOAT of women's tennis in pure beauty.

However Emma has her smile which is very radiant and powerful, it will give her a lot of fans, but like I said, she will have to win a lot of slams if she wants to continue being in the limelight for 10-15 years...

Her looks are clever because she can be whatever you want her to be.
She looks a bit British, a bit Romanian, a bit Chinese, and enough of each of them for you to view her as predominantly that thing depending on where you yourself are from.
I don't know much about Chinese language but I thought hers sounded good (in so far as it was incredibly grating and annoying like Chinese is supposed to sound).

I wish one day you would realize that constantly bringing up Graf and her fans becomes distasteful, more so than with other high flung players, given the history with one particular fan of hers. Just FYI.

Also, I see absolutely little connection between Graf and Radu.

She cannot be everything at the same time.
Unless you expect her to have a massive impact in all the countries, that is only possible if she wins a lot of slams.....

"Greater" because of "brand value"?
You are d*******...

A fakie with a fake name and pic of steffi called me a d******* ??? Look in the mirror, you shall find one.

If 2 players have similar number of slams and stats for GOAT then whoever is the bigger icon will be the GOAT

If Brand Value/Iconic status/Popularity does not matter then Federer is no longer the GOAT, Novak has made a JOKE of Federer in every possible way.

You are the same fellow who believes Fed is the GOAT and yet you question brandpower ??? Don't spit on the plate you eat food with, your own Fed will lose all his GOAT status to Novak, all of his significant records have been broken and he humiliated himself at Wimbledon 2019, forgot that ???

After dazzling with his keen eye for talent, Raul will now impress with his marketing acumen.

“She [Emma] was ranked #338 and given a WC. Had never even faced a Top 100 player in a match. Very questionable whether she belonged at Wimbledon with the world's best 128, her little run notwithstanding. But Wimbledon is desperate to hype a British player. This type of shameless wild card favoritism needs to be done away with when there are many worthy much higher ranked players waiting to play Wimbledon.”

“So how does this work. Emma was born and raised in Canada. Presumably she has changed U.K. If she were not a U.K. citizen, Wimbledon would not have had an interest in her? The whole thing is silly. Wild Cards should not be used for low ranked domestic players when there are hundreds of international players ranked above them.”

Those are facts !
Truth hurts?

Rafa not being marketable must be a pain?
There were years when even Sharapova beat Rafa in endorsements/overall income from the year.

What you do not understand is that there are players who do everything to make money. Meaning 30 of 40 days per year for their sponsors. For instance the production of ads/commercials (which is very time consuming(. Or meet and greet events with company customers or salespersons of the year, home stories, and so on).
Osaka is such a person, Sharapova was the same. They are money girls, they know they will never be one of the all-time greats, so making money is the main goal for them.
Kournikova had a sophisticated media strategy, she had a favorite photographer who provided her pimple-faced teenage fans with photos in sexy poses every second weeks, and so on.

Players like Steffi and Serena had a different approach. They practiced more, they played more, they won more, and they wanted more time for themselves.
I remember a IMG representative in the mid-90s claiming he could get three times the endorsement money Steffi actually made for her if she only were willing to give more of her time to sponsors and media. And why she would not play with a more revealing tennis shirt, after all she had the body for it!!
But Steffi would have none of it. And yet she was always among the top 50 money earners among sports persons, regularly the only women among them.

Her advantage (same later with Serena) was that she was always on TV on weekends, always in slam finals. She was world famous, a household name because of her winning so much, playing so many all-time great finals. When she beat Hingis in the FO 99 final this match was front page news all over the world.

Raducanu's win at this USO is the first woman's tennis final which had a comparable world-wide impact. Hopefully we will get a new women's sports superstar with her. Again after more than 20 years.

"Icon" has nothing to do with money.
People like you will never understand that. Different values, different approach to life.

Far more than 50 % of women's tennis fans in the 90s were Steffi fans. She had easily more fans than Navratilova, Seles, Sabatini, Sanchez combined.
There were famous politicians among them, Nobel Prize winners, artists, writers etc.
And one lunatic who thought Steffi could not became #1 again without his help.

Steffi and Emma both are elegant players with fighting spirit, humble and lovely characters, beautiful and sexy women. A true icon and an icon in the making.

Millions of Chinese kids were not looking up and identifying with Sharapova as they will be with Emma. Those Chinese kids now have Emma as their role model.

Emma identified with the Chinese player Ni La as her role model. Emma has some basic fluency in Mandarin, as that is her mother tongue. Her level of fluency is irrelevant. She is the first woman singles champion that can speak English and Chinese.

With another Slam win, Emma will be as huge in China as she is now in England. England is so desperate for a winner they have even elevated the unpleasant, crude, whiny, man-child Murray as some type of icon.

Imagine what will happen with a player from London that actually has a likeable on-court persona.

Again, the opportunity here is simply huge and unprecedented.

Yeah it's not 90s anymore. You cannot motor ahead in a vacuum. I will be pleasantly surprised if Raducanu is given that opportunity. But already, there's a concern trolling Independent article about Emma's smile and the expectations from women to be all smiles. Which is all very valid except that Emma was already smiling like that at 11. I don't think she will be allowed to just be. The corporations have already started yanking her into Chinese conquests and social media will start to expect her to be activist.
