Equal Pay; Does it Hurt ATP Players?

r2473

G.O.A.T.
-Below is the payout for Indian Wells and Miami for the ATP (and WTA).
-Please compare this payout to what ATP players receive in prize money for other Masters 1000 events, especially ones that are not joint events with the WTA.
-What you will find is that ATP players are paid MORE at these events than any other Masters 1000 event

CONCLUSIONS:

1) If the WTA players are being subsidized (being paid more than they are "worth"), it is far from clear that the subsidy is being paid for by the ATP players. Otherwise, please explain why the ATP isn't paying more prize money to it's players in non-joint events

2) If you want to argue that Indian Wells generates more money than ATP standalone, logically that must be due to the presence of the WTA. Perhaps a synergistic effect?

3) If you want to argue that ATP players should be paid even more at Indian Wells (and Miami?) than they are now, please show why.

4) Bear in mind, I'm not arguing that the WTA "deserves" what they earn in these events (I don't have access to the financials). I'm arguing that the ATP isn't harmed by what the WTA is paid. If the tournament wants to subsidize the WTA (and I don't know that this is what is happening), they are free to do so. It's their money.

Comments welcome.
