Federer is thinking of retiring after the Olympics in London

His reaction to the London site chosen for Olympics according to his mom:

"He was saying 'Mum, can you imagine having the Olympics at Wimbledon?'

"I tried to calm him down a bit by asking how old he would be in 2012. But we worked out that he'd be only 30 so it's certainly possible.

"He even said that he might be able to win the Olympic gold medal at Wimbledon and then retire."

Boy, talk about some long term goals and planning ahead....

Excuse me, but what are you talking about? Getting ahead of himself? He cares about representing his country and he wants to win gold--who wouldn't. He's obviously excited about Olympic tennis coming to Wimbledon, his favorite tournament and on his favorite surface.

Sheesh, no one is above constructive criticism, but let the man have dreams for pete's sakes. That's what I think, anyway.

Hopefully some promising youth would appear and battle Federer for domination of tennis, and create an epic similar to that of Sampras/Agassi, before Federer retires.

Whether or not that youth is Nadal, only time can tell.

Federer isn't that old, and Agassi has been around for quite a long time. He turned pro at 16!!! Yea I think age is catching up to him though.

i'm not sure I understand about how the olympics and Wimbledon will be played that summer. Will there be 2 separate events at the All England Club? Will Wimbledon be played in June, and then the Olympics played in August? or will they combine it for one great winner take both titles tourny?

Yo, Brian, great question. I personally don't see Wimby people combining their event because of the money thing. I mean, they stuff their coffers big time during wimby, its their only bonanza. They wouldn't want to share that dough with Olympic organizers, would they?

so...they may not even hold the olympics at the All England Club. My guess is that the olympics will never be played on grass given the amount of player protest that would erupt. They will probably adapt a current London tennis facility into the venue.

Wimbledon Tennis Centre is the only facility in London able to accomodate the demands of the Olympics. Plus, Wimby people would welcome the Olympics money that would be disbursed: they must be superhappy because they would get 2 tourneys in one summer, 2 big money-makers in one summer. Sure thing the Olympics will be played at wimby. Follow the money?

His ego is pretty humoungous. I remember him going into the French saying he's afraid of nobody because he's beaten them all. That attitude will get him stopped at Australian semi's by Safin and French semi's by Nadal. He's lucky Wimbledon's lawns hide all his flaws.

Oh please. Lets all get some perspective here. Keeping your career goals grounded in regards to achievements is paramount to longevity. One step at a time should be the key instead of your ego foreseeing your results years ahead, no matter how good you are.

Name another player that owns the grass court like him, Rosso; it's not rocket science why he can say this and be respected for it.

Brian, good point, can they actually replant the grass for all those courts? Can this actually be done? Hmmm...they might have to use the courts they use for qualifying tournament, or something...whatever they do, Olympics is most likely to be played on grass which plays into Fed's hands, provided he stays healthy. Ironically, it gives some guy like Gasquet enough time to become a serious threat on Fed's beloved surface.
