Federer Named World's Most Marketable Sports Star

This whole thing is quite misleading. Ronaldo earns more overall than Federer but he is less marketable because he earns less in endorsements? Wrong because the money he makes by selling his shirts are not accounted in the endorsements category because Real Madrid already pay him for that in his salary. But whatever things Roger sell are linked to his endorsement money.

Ronaldo has almost 6 times more likes on Facebook that tells you something.

Please explain to me how you account for marketability based on shirt sales.

Touché. Likes on facebook is a notoriously poor way to compare value. If a large proportion of Ronaldo followers are from developing or comparatively poor countries (which they are) then their value could easily be considered by marketers as lower than someone like Federer.

Federer may be marketable, but he's sure an underachiever. Yes, he's won 17 Slams. But so what? When did he ever turn up to a Slam final with five scantily clad blondes in his box and huge bags under his eyes and hit the ball 10 MPH slower than he did in the six rounds leading up to the final?

Because clearly a player selling more shirts is more likely to sell other products than someone not selling many shirts.
How do you correlate this to marketability though? It only shows he can sell shirts. How does that compare to selling financial/legal services for example? Poorly, I'll tell you that.

Lol at folks bagging these sports in favour of "muh NFL" or "muh Baseball".

Tennis, football, golf, cricket are universal, or at least played seriously in much more than one country.
They're also probably the four best sports in existence.
All are incredible demonstrations of the human mind, body, will, and heart.

Football is universal. The World Game. Every country plays it.
It has the deepest pool of talent of any sport by far due to its following, and everyone knows how to play.
Get the ball in the goal.
More human effort and emotion (both from players and fans) has probably been expended trying to do that supposedly simple task than in any other athletic activity since the dawn of time.

Golf is severely underrated by many, but it's the most difficult mental challenge in sports as far as I'm concerned.
Face it, most of you probably couldn't even swing the club properly.
Being consistent in this sport is insanely difficult due to the high number of different factors involved in playing it.
Everything about it is hard.

Cricket is nuts.
Having to hit the small, heavy ball, coming at you at ridiculous speed and spin, with a narrow plank of wood such that you hit it far enough to score runs but no such that anyone can catch it, and then having to stand out there for hours, doing that hundreds of times against probably as many different trajectories of delivery and spin is probably one of the most challenging tasks in international sport.
A top test batsman has will, courage, concentration, and skill that most "American sport" players could only dream of.

Tennis, I am quite sure, is the best sport in the world.
It is literally everything a professional sport should be.
There isn't one part of your body, or part of your mind, that isn't tested to its fullest as a member of the Association of Tennis Professionals.
There is no single feat in individual sports greater or more difficult than walking out onto the grass on the final Sunday and showing the world how to properly play sport, in exchange for this.
As the holder of both the ATP #1 ranking and the All-England Single Handed Men's Championship of the World, Novak Djokovic is the undisputed top tennis player.
For me, that makes him the current best sportsman and athlete in the world, possibly tied with Christopher Froome (current champion of the most difficult sporting event in the world).

I don't agree about the challenge of playing cricket. It's tough, no doubt about it, but it cannot compare to tennis, squash or badminton, for example, in that the batsman is stationary whereas the aforementioned sports require a significantly higher degree of coordination and explosive athleticism.

I don't think we should be eulogizing the demands of a sport when discussing marketability, though. End of the day, it's all about the business that can be done on the back of the sport itself.

That's true, I was just having a go at some folks who seem to enjoy bagging out some of the greatest sports. ;)
