Federer News: Surgery

It does reassure me that his Wimbledon performance this year was indeed tainted by injury. If he was able to make the QF at 40, while having a nagging injury and knowing that he probably wasn't pushing it because he was being cautious, it means he's still got game to be competitive.

Of course
In the set where he got bageled he was cautious to not bend too much or to aggravate it, he just wanted to get it over with without injuring his body a lot.
With proper knees he still has a slam or 2 in him.

I too think so. He wants to play, for sure.. hope he comes back..
He will but just this last time, “perfectly” timed comeback, he will continue being a punching bag and confidence builder for the young guys and will end the amazing career at the bottom, ranked at 400+…
Sad but…coming soon

That 2019 Wimbledon final hurts even more now.
With #21 in his bag Federer could have retired after Basel 2019 to avoid the problems with his injured knee.

I personally think that he knows he is done, but if he retires he probably won’t make the full money from his endorsement contracts which probably max out when he is an ‘active player’ on tour. Better to be an oft-injured active player than a retired one financially. Uniqlo accountants must be shaking their head.

True greatness lies in maximizing your talent and fighting until you have absolutely 0 chances of win.

Not in running away at 25 or at 30 like some ATGs for better stats or some better h2h /win%?

Plus in the modern era being in the limelight is also important, the fact that today's youngsters like @NoleIsBoat are bashing Federer and talking of Fed vs Nadal vs Novak even in 2021 means that Fed is relevant even at 40, that is infinitely better than retiring in 2012 and today being some forgotten nobody.

So even if he is trolled for 2019 wimbledon I will take that over he retiring some years back, lol .... if he even reaches a final in slams in 2022 or 2023 it will worth it than sitting at home and being forgotten, plus ranking/seeding drop wont be an issue, if he is good enough to beat Novak on his return or even to go toe to toe then he will definetly beat the youngsters on his way as well no matter how tough the draw is.

Maybe...Maybe not...
But if his knees get fixed then they are not over.
Certainly Federer doesn't think it is over and neither do I.
You are free to believe it is all over, infact it is all over for your hero in your avatar as well, why doesn't he retire? He can play GOLF fulltime.

Fit Fed couldn't beat novak for years in a slam. This finished fed has no chance.

I'm just wondering what went wrong between the summer 2019 and spring 2020 when he decided to go for a surgery.

He was fine in 2019: after Wimbledon final he played 2 matches in Cincy, 5 in NY, 3 in Shanghai, 5 in Basel (where he won his last trophy) and 4 in London.
2020 AO: 6 matches.

Any ideas what exactly has caused his injury?
My gut feeling -- I could be wrong here -- is he overplayed in Dec 2019 with his exhos at South America / Mexico. This laid the foundation for the right knee to break down in his bruising AO 2020 5 setter matches against Millman/Sandgren.

Traditionally Fed used to work on his fitness / conditioning in Dubai with Pierre Pagnini end of December.

The plain, obvious and unadulterated truth for anyone with half a brain.

Murray and Serena are in the same boat.

All 3 will need parts replacements later in life (Murray will likely get it the worst with these metal particles poisonning his organs; he's a freaking willing human experiment for the joint replacement industry, all for nothing)
