Well, we started the season with FBPD, and we finished with FBPD.

I cant sit here and say this was a positive year as the start, middle, and finish was not very ideal. But there was some positive takeaways such as winning some tourneys, staying top 3, beating Rafa and Djoker in big matches. But overall it was a rough year.

However, we all need to remember that he is 38 and we are lucky we still have him finding opportunities to win big matches and tourneys, even if he does not close it out. This is something we have to get used to more and more often. It wont get better, but worse.

Enjoy it while we still can. He got a big win here and without it he was not even in position to lose today. So Fed is still amazing me, regardless of the rough year.

Go Fed.

Biggest drop in form match-to-match (without injuries) since when?

Kyrgios to Millman in NY 2018?

Maybe last year's event with Anderson to Zverev?
2015 Wimbledon semis against Murray was God-like, the final was awful, but then again, Djokovic is by far the superior opponent than Tsitsipas.

After how last year ended (with a wimper, running slow, sluggish and a hand injury that sapped all groundstroke strength), I dared not dream that I would ever see Roger flying around the court and smacking forehands again like he used to. And we got plenty of that this year. The results may not be there in the trophy cabinet, but it was a pleasure to watch him on court again most of this season.

Age. I never want to hear people rip on age or say this is even close to “peak” Fed. This match is proof.
The people who say this live vicariously through Djokovic, so consider how pathetic an existence that must be, and that applies to anyone whose self esteem is somehow tied to a professional athlete (not just Novak).

You can show these cretins this clip and force them to watch it (and this is absolutely PEAK Federer), and they would deny or deflect, because it exposes their ignorance on a quite colossal level. It's more convenient to live in a bubble and invent whatever reality suits you.

Peak Fed.:

Watching this Federer's movement in this match and comparing it to today, it's like comparing a video at 60fps to a video at 25-30fps.You know what I mean.

No, he's not. The Tsitsipas of the tournament is not inferior to Djokovic Wimbledon 2015. Don't be ignorant.
Yes he is. Tsits just loss to Rafa on indoor hard (his worst surface by far). Comparing a Djoker on grass at a slam to Tsits here is laughable. Now today, Tsits was playing at an extremely high level, but not ATG levels.

That comparison is beyond stupid.

Okay, Federer wiped the floor with Novak yesterday, yet Federer displayed a pathetic performance today and was outplayed by Tsitsipas, so Tsitsipas > Novak.

See how stupid it is?

Yes, anyone with two functioning eyeballs and two brain cells to rub together can see it. His FH is effortess and such tremendous power, and his movement is sublime. So the Djokovic Bozos who create 80 threads a week attempting to prove Fed is peak now merely showcases their stupidity. Fed of 2004 would have wiped the floor today with Tsitsipas.

I have two questions concerning Fed :

1- Why doesn't he use the almost systematic home court advantage to call upon the crowd when he's in trouble?

2- Why doesn't he serve to the body ?

No joke, I think Fed would do better without the insane crowd support he gets. I think it creates a lot of pressure to live up to.

But everyone knows Federer is old. Nobody is denying that. The fact he's out there still competing is a testament to his talent. But just as is evident with all players who reach beyond their 30s, their form can drop completely from one match to the next. It's common.

He had enough opportunities. But even the most ardent Federer fans know that he's the greatest ever at creating opportunities and probably the worst ever at capitalizing on those opportunities. His BP conversion ratio is among the worst. It's been that way since forever.

Nadal has many many more years of experience than young Tsits who's only been a pro for 3 years. Tsits has a huge upside and can improve in a lot of ways still. His attacking game isn't polished yet, especially at the net. He can do a lot more with the BH including slices and finishing points at the net. He's still not a finished product.

He always should have done better in losses.

But I'm just going to pretend he would've lost the final to Thiem anyway and try to forget about this one.
With such breakpoint conversion for sure he would have lost to Thiem again.I want to see him beating Dominic again next year, on hardcourts, because if he found the way to go through those mental demons and beat Djokovic, he has to find a way to win against the Austrian too.

It doesn't feel mental at all though. He's just been outplayed by Thiem in his recent losses so they don't bother me much. Even in Madrid when he scrounged up some match points in the breaker, Thiem was just rock solid on serve to save them iirc.

Dominic is very Wawrinka-like in that he can beat anyone on his day if he decides to just not miss. Nothing you can do about 90+mph forehands and backhands, especially for Federer who never cedes ground. But when Thiem's spray n' pray isn't working, Fed can utterly destroy him like he did at this tourny just a year ago.

yeah, i mean i still think the age difference and where they are at in their careers plays a role, but also like you said thiem is that player that if he is just hitting super hard and not making errors, it is what it is is. its not like fed didnth ave his chances in that initial match. honestly IW annoys me more because fed was ahead

Well sure, of course age is a factor.

When I say "there's nothing you can do," I mean there's nothing Roger could do in 2019 (although, not hitting drop shots in that IW final would've helped, smh). Obviously there's a lot prime Fed (or Novak) could've done to counter it if given the opportunity at this tourny. Just look at what Rafa did a year ago at the USO. Thiem was on fire there too, but he just kept making Domi hit one more shot and he eventually cracked. And that was far from peak Rafa defense.

Guys, that Tsitsipas defeat was really bad.

Roger had 2 days rest while Stefanos played 3 hours the day before.
Yet you could see Roger struggling with Stef's pace and serves. He was left 1 meter to the ball in many instances, or simply shanked his shots.

Seems like his mind is trying to cash a check his body can't anymore.

I'm so happy for the fans though. I'm side eyeing some of those ticket prices though, I know tennis in general is on the more expensive side, but it seems quite steep. nonetheless whether or not this is an ambitious tour idk, but for the fans who might not other wise get to see him because he doesn't go latin america, its a treat and i hope they cherish that memory.

sascha tagging along is hilarious, he's like this little kid behind a major super star but i'm sure it will be unforgettable for him as well.
