Federer & Peter Lundgren

I wonder if Federer hired Lundgren again, if it would help him get back to the top. Lundgren (who is coaching Dimitrov) helped Fed develop his volleying skills and really helped him focus mentally, enough to get him to #1. Does he have the solution for Fed against the top players? Right now, he's helping Dimitrov climb the rankings and certainly Dimitrov performed well against Nadal (the backhand held up well). I wonder if Lundgren would have similar advice for Roger...he has worked with some of the greatest talents in the sport and somehow convinced them to adopt a solid work ethic (Safin, Rios). What do you think?

Too bad. Fed doesn't believe in anyone but himself. In recent interview, he said something like he had 5 coaches in the last 2 years (which implied to me as he's too good to have a coach).

I have been his fan, but I am getting tired of his stubborness and it's painful to see him hitting most of the balls into the net (if it was Soccer, he would be number 1 goal scorer or whatever it calls).

He needs a coach to pump him up and/or teach him or at least relax his mental strength to be a great warrior again. I hope he'll be back.

either he is right, or he will decline because of refusing to have a coach.

Peter is more interested in developing young players, I think. I am sure he won't coach Fed again.

If more and more people know Fed's stubbornness, I think eventually no one will offer to become his full time coach.

I don't know why Safin and Lundgren parted ways in 2006. I'm sure if Safin stuck with him through thick and thin, he would be in a slightly better place now. But that's just my opinion.

I agree. I think Lundgren is probably the only Coach who could be productive with Federer. But ... Roger needs to acknowledge he has a "problem" first. So far that level of humility has not been evident.

I wondered same thing. For all other coaches, taking up Federer at this point is somewhat risky move. Fed never had real coach after Peter Lundgren. He is the guy who polished the racquet smashing, erratic, a teenager raw talent Federer at the time. Just by being with the guy, Fed would be instantly getting back to the mind set of his early days of dominations, etc... But as Kaptain karl pointed out, it is hard to change anything for a guy who reached something like 8-9 finals out of last 10-11 slams and won 6-7(?) of them.....

Why did Lundgren and Federer part ways in the first place? Was it the same way as Federer has seemingly gotten rid of all his other coaches

I just feel as if Federer's main problem is his inspiration to work on his game and stay focused in the match. It's gotten to the point where he's so frustrated about his game (forehand, backhand, net game, even the 1st serve %) that he smashed a racket. You can feel it in the post-match interview. Lundgren and Federer were a great match (while it lasted) and Lundgren has experience with coaching players in similar psychological situations as Federer.

That doesn't imply that he's too good to have coach. It only implies that he thinks getting a coach wouldn't work since he tried that 5 times already in the last two years.

Yup. I think they didn't part ways in best of terms neither. I think there is enough pride on both sides to make the reunion even less likely.

However, the other reason they parted, in fact the main reason they parted when they did was that Lundgren was unhappy that Roger didn't reward him the way he would have liked in 2003 when he won his first Slam and the Masters Cup. Tony Roche also felt Roger was very cheap with him in that regard.

Lundgren mentioned it in a couple of interviews when he began working with Safin.

Peter Lundgren would be a great choice for Federer imo.

The last time I heard of Lundgren was about 2 years ago, he was smacked up to his **** at an LTA conference and was fired almost immediately after slurring his words on stage! He was working with Josh Goodall at the time - to be fair that could be enough to drive anyone to drink! (only joking Goody!)

Im sure it was because he had to choose between Peter Lundgren and another guy. Roger chose the other guy.

I cant remember the name of the guy that he chose..
