fun drills for junior intermediate player?

I'm looking for some fun drills to do with my 12-year-old son (intermediate level). We play a game called "murder" where one person is "king," and you play a groundstroke rally (and if the opponent wins), a volley rally, then overheads, and if he wins them all, he becomes king. But I was looking for other drills/games to make things more interesting. We usually just baseline rally, and rally only in the service court, but that gets stale after awhile, so need some fresh ideas. Thanks.

I dont really know what level you mean by intermediate, so im assuming about a 3.0-3.5 ntrp level. The "murder" game is a good idea and you can add some other features such as adding markers on the court, and having him hit there to have the ball in play which will help his placement. Another is having races across the court which will help his speed and back pedeling from net.

One very basic drill that kids always seem to like is letting them try to hit winners. Stand close to the net where you normally would play volleys. Feed them easy balls where they try to pass you and hit winners. For every winner they get a point and for every ball where you can hit a volley back you get a point. I usually let them do this drill for a short time at the end of the practice-session.

I remember playing a game, "volley-er is king"
the game is up to xx (a score of your choice) and points can only be one at the net.
1 starts at the net, 1 at the baseline.
the volley-er can't leave the net, the baseliner can't approach the net.

when at the baseline the aim is pass the volley-er to become king
The volley-er aims to win each point, but if they are passed, goes to the baseline and must pass the volley-er.

It will help with volleys and passing shots (you can include lobs also, if it's appropriate)

gah, no edit function.

"points can only be won at the net"

(can't believe I wrote one, haha)

I also agree with commiboi, if you section off the corners of the court, you can offer points if he gets the ball in the area.
