I'm lookin for a good school in the science area

I'm looking at colgate, stony brook, Northern Kentucky, Wagner, Sacred heart, Loyola, and lafayette college.

How are the tennis teams? and conferences?

The recruits for my schools are about where i am at right now, and i am a junior.

How should i go about talking to them.

Also woul dmy academics make me look better as a recruit, I'm in all honors and have a 4.01 gpa

my sat scores are probably going to fall at 2000+ and a 31+ on act

Best of luck to you Ferbious!

I'll be watching this thread closely...My son is 3 years behind you. :)

Thanks!

Yeah i just wish i could have the coaches numbers lol

Im going to be calling and annoying some of them once my tournament schedule starts back up in january, until then i can only really train during this month long off season

Email coaches now, you can get in touch with them now and begin gathering information first hand from them! This also will put you on their radar as well.

Been doing that, i think ive emailed 30 some schools lol

You might want to narrow it down to the schools you like best for academic reasons, rather than for the quality of their tennis program. As a 2 star, you may get an offer from a low D1 school that has a spot to fill, but you're very unlikely to get any scholarship money for tennis. Based on your academic record though, your chance of getting some merit-based scholarship seems pretty good.

Have you considered D3 schools?

Been through this past couple years.... I'm assuming you're familiar with what are going to be two of your greatest websites:

https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/

http://www.tennisrecruiting.net/

You have quite a range of schools with your academic credentials. (Colgate and N. Kentucky on the same short list?! lol.) The first site will present some questions and give you a nice list of school matches.

Assuming your male, athletic scholarship money will be very tough with 2 stars. Get that 3rd and with your scores some dream schools begin to crack open – Lehigh, Villanova, Bucknell, Lafayette….

You're a step ahead of where my kids were but keep you mind open… Problem is male D1 scholarship money at 2 stars is not likely and the strongest academic D1 science schools in the NE are going to be tough for a 2 star player.... eventually some nice D3s start to look good if you want to mix tennis with strong academics.

Best of luck!

If you're a NY resident and like Stony Brook, then go there. I don't know anything about the tennis team, but it's a terrific academic choice.

Don't dismiss D3 tennis. At the highly academic school where I'm the ***'t, all four of our freshman are 4 stars and all were recruited by D1 schools. Besides, what's the point of playing on a team (regardless of D1 or D3), if you can't make the line-up?

Plus stony brook is 33k total tuition, im sure i can cut that cost a good bit with academic scholarships and grants

Are you dead set on D1 ? Because it sounds like Trinity in San Antonio would be a good choice for you or maybe the CMC colleges in California.

I'm sure it does.... (only point was to call out two extremes.) Quite frankly, you aren't likely to get into, much less play at Colgate. You'll be easily accepted to NKU and be challenged to play there. You are going to have lots of choices -- and that's a good thing.

I live in san antonio and trinity became d3 a while back, plus i know them all already

i want to experience some place new and d1 is the preference just because of better funding

Colgate recruits 2 and 3 stars as well, lately only 3.

there will be 4 spots when i graduate so i think i have a shot if i raise my star rank next spring.

the academic requirements are high, but i have a ton of boosters for my application lol volunteer hours, academics, clubs at school, national latin club etc.

I coach at the D3 level and played D1. My top 3 guys could all play D1, but to get a scholarship at D1 for men at a school that is academically equivalent, is very difficult. Instead, at D3, you may qualify for academic or need based aid that can significantly bring the costs down. My guys are able to start here and compete for a national title. Its the entire package, tennis, academics, and costs. I would look at NJIT and SUNY Binghamton too, but as a 2 star, you are unlikely to get athletic money as good schools will focus giving their athletic money to guys who would be near the top of their lineup.

You seem open to the east based on your schools you listed. Some that come to mind are Villanova, St. Joseph's, and La Salle. These are all smaller D1 schools with good academics. I think you would make all of the tennis teams, definitely La Salle is the weakest of the three. Not sure how much money you could get but the top four where I played La Salle got some money. Not to mention Philly is a great city!

Yes, Lafayette is a good school. They are playing my old school, Drew University (D3) this year. I don't think they give scholarships for tennis. Just because they are D1, doesn't mean they even have to offer scholarships.

Thats fine if they don't, i just want to go to a d1 program that's got some good players and has good competitors.

I can get some academic scholarship hopefully, and some grants to go with it.

There is a d3 program that im looking at though, hobart college. they sent me an email last week and they are a phenomenal school

Yes, Hobart is an exceptional school with a beautiful campus and a terrific tennis complex. Be warned though: it's a long, long winter up there, and the outdoor (spring) season may be brief and cold.

Ferb, please don't take this as a harsh critique, but after looking at your vid (and I realize it's limited to forehands and backhands) I don't see that you have D1 strokes--now.

In that video i agree, ill be posting another one soon, since then i have leaded up my racquet and added 7ish pounds of muscle, interested to get your thoughts. ill probably have it sometime this weekend

The best kind of video is one where you are playing an actual match. Preferably a tournament match against a tough opponent. You should post it on your tennis recruiting page.

This is what makes the college search and finding a fit so fun. We visited/toured/interviewed at these two and Lafayette and there are some *drastic* differences. (SJU and La Salle are somewhat similar; Lafayette entirely different.) La Salle really inner city; strong health programs. SJU; business. Laf; engineering/bio.

Both my kids looked very seriously at Lafayette but even in own home there was disagreement (I loved; wife disliked.) Lafayette is not in Philly, much smaller and much more difficult to get into. With OP creds, SJU and La Salle are likely to offer packages much more attractive than Laf. OP is going to need to visit, sleep over and experience a couple of these. I think he could play for any of these three. If you're beating 3-stars work to get 3. Friend's son had 3 and was being actively recruited as soph. Grew to like football more, injured and recovered, drop to 2-stars as senior and coaches that were actively pursuing stopped returning calls. (Kid seems somewhat burned out and broadening interests; Dad still at tennis full tilt which makes for interesting dynamic.)

Have fun.

They host the D3 regional tournament. It is a beautiful campus and strong academics. The town has a nice charm to it too. As a 2 star you should be able to make the starting lineup there. Be warned that it snows a ton! There are a lot of really good D3 schools academically that would be a good match as athletically. Stevens Institute has a great team and very good coaching. Vassar is strong academically and has indoor courts on campus. There are many schools throughout New England too. You may want to look at Stone Hill or Bentley if you are more business oriented and are good D2 programs.

UNC-Asheville. All 2 and 3 stars. Good natural sciences program. Great location in Asheville, NC. Big South conference, so you get some decent competition (4 stars) with Campbell, Radford, Winthrop, etc.

Now. There are over 4,000 colleges in US alone. Answer six basic questions and get a more manageable amount at:

https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/...-your-college-fit/college-search-step-by-step

Out of this list, pick an acceptable, local school and schedule a tour during your winter break. The tour will show you all types of things and get your mind thinking.

Do you have access to a HS counselor at a local school?

Everyone can go to college and everyone can play college tennis. Finding the best mix is the fun. You're 12 months away from hitting the send button to perhaps 8 - 14 colleges.

If you like Hobart, you may also want to check out St. Lawrence University in NY. My friend is the coach there. I have coached against him, he is a really good coach.

Do you have older siblings that have gone through the college selection process? Are you parents heavily involved?

High school counselors do a lot or required HS to college interfacing -- grades, letters of rec, and prob much else that I don't know. Not sure who does this for home schooled students. The board will forward your SAT scores (and it's nice to know at least 4 colleges prior to sitting so you get scores sent for free.)

>.< im the old sibling!!! im the "Learn from your mistakes" kid lmao

I have a single mom and she just does what she needs to, driving to tournaments practics etc. as far as college stuff, she does some research and helps out with going through emails.

im schooled online, and i do have an idea of where to go, i have my top four just about picked.
