2009 French Open - 4th Round Loss to Soderling
2011 Australian Open - Quarterfinal Loss to Ferrer
2012 Wimbledon - 2nd Round Loss to Rosol
2013 Wimbledon - 1st Round Loss to Darcis
2013 U.S. Open - ??????

Nadal is not going to win because he's the favorite but if he wasn't the favorite he would win, no?

2008 US Open, really? Not the US Open 2013 either though possibly a slight favourite before the event started, I'm not sure.

Going into that tournament, Nadal had won 48 out of his last 50 matches, and 8 tournaments in 4 months.

He didn't win it cause of fatigue he had played in Montreal and won it he also went deep in cincy and also won Olympics he did so well in 3 hard court tournaments winning US Open was asking too much from the 22 year old.:)

Doesnt change that the new #1 was a big favorite though.

I don't think he was even the favorite at all for the US Open in 2008. Up to that point, he had never even made the final and many did not think he could win on fast hard court.

He was also most definitely not the favorite at Wimbledon 2012 or Wimbledon 2013.

I will agree with you that he was the heavy favorite at the 2009 French, the 2011 Australian, and the 2013 US Open, but he was also the heavy favorite at many other majors that he ended up winning.

I really do not understand the point of this thread. What are you trying to prove?

It's odd to lose many times when you are a huge favorite.

No, it is not. Nobody can win everything. Every great player has lost many tournaments when they were the favorite. Also, many of those times he was not actually the favorite.

Nadal certainly was the pre-tournament favourite, having won 8 tournaments in 4 months and 48 of his 50 matches going into the 2008 US Open. Federer's form was a mess after the 2008 Wimbledon final, losing to Simon, Karlovic and Blake

What about all those French Opens he won? He was the huge favorite of every French Open he ever played.

By 2008 USO Nadal had won ZERO hardcourt slams to that date. Playing 5 sets is much different than playing 3 sets.

So.. Nadal shouldn't have been the favorite win the USO over some hardcourt NON SLAM events.

Nadal's grass prime ended in 2010, he shouldn't have been the favorite to win any wimbledon title thereafter

Some may have considered him the favorite, but there were also many who did not. He had broken through at Wimbledon and beaten Federer at Wimbledon that year, but by the thinnest of margins. Many consider the grass to be slower than the hard courts at the US Open now, and that would give more edge to Federer. On top of that, Federer had dominated the US Open and won the past 4 tournaments coming into that year.

He may have been the favorite, but he was hardly a heavy favorite at that tournament.

the fact that OP has 1 French Open listed says everything...and that he listed '13 Wimbledon but not '13 French

Only in the sense that Nadal hadn't won the US Open before. But in 2008, Nadal had dominated clay (as usual), won both Queen's Club and Wimbledon so had dominated grass, and won Toronto and the Beijing Olympics on hardcourts going into the US Open.

Nadal has the longest 3 surface streak in tennis.

But back then Hardcourts were still his worst surface....:)

He'd just won Toronto and The Olympics.. not many had doubt he was capable of winning the USO at that point. I was excited by the prospect of a Fedal final that year after Federer dispatched Djokovic in the semi, but Murray was a spoiler! (and the hurricane of course, making Rafa play two days in a row).

Okay, I suppose I left out two Grand Slams where he was the huge favorite to win:

2010 U.S. Open - Won
2011 French Open - Won

It is worth noting that for being the most dominant player at a particular Grand Slam ever, he has only been seeded #1 at the French on 2 occasions. One of those times, he lost in the 4th round.

Compare that to Federer who has been seeded #1 at Wimbledon on 6 occasions and won it four times.

Nadal likes to not be the favorite.

Oh really? Just those two, hmmm? Who was the favourite at Roland Garros from 2005-2008, in 2010, 2012 and in 2013?

It is worth noting that for being the most dominant player at a particular Grand Slam ever, he has only been seeded #1 at the French on 2 occasions. One of those times, he lost in the 4th round.

And in what way does that make Nadal's achievement lesser? If anything, it simply shows that his seed at the tournament doesn't actually matter, especially with someone who has a 59-1 record there.

Compare that to Federer who has been seeded #1 at Wimbledon on 6 occasions and won it four times.

So?

just cos he was seeded 2 at RG doesn't mean he was not the favourite.

Just as it was was absurd for the French Open to seed Sampras #1 at the French Open 5 times, it is even more absurd that they seeded Nadal #1 at the French Open only twice. What an injustice to the man.

Nadal has been the huge favorite at all RGs he's played and he's won all of them except for 2009.

Actually I thought djokovic was the favorite going into 2011 rg. That's why the Fed match was so big.

Whoever thinks Nadal is not the favorite at RG any year is not paying attention (although I guess 2011 is the most forgivable since Djoko had beaten him in 2 clay masters).
