what are the pro's and con's of each? besides familiarity, does one have any advantages on serve /volley/forehand etc.

thanks

I don't know about others, but for me, the wider shape of the Head grip provides a better sense of orientation of the racquet face and increases the torsional stability of any shot that is struck off-center (which is pretty much every shot, unless you hit dead center, flat with no spin). I am just conjecturing, but I think that some people dislike the shape because they feel it hinders them from changing grips or from whipping the racquet. Someone who likes the Wilson grip better can chime in on this. I was a Wilson user for 15 years, but really loved the Head shape once I tried it. It all comes down to personal preference. It's a polarizing subject and there are many threads on this (much to many).

i cant constantly change to my 1hbh grip correctly with heads wide pattern pallet, just feels weird. other than that i like them, very stable. as for wilsons/ect pallet shapes, they're compatible to everyone, almost equally divided shape so its more comfy to the user to switch grips fast when needed.

The Head handle shape seems better suited to those who hit with eastern grips but it's a personal thing.

I find it difficult to adjust between grips during play as the rectangular shape takes just that bit longer than rounder shapes like wilson or prince. I also find it more difficult to grip the stick firmly during volleys when I shift to a continental grip.

That's just me :)

Although the rectangular shape of Head's grip gives great feedback to the hands on the orientation of the racquet head, I find that it doesn't let me smoothly rotate between my forehand and backhand grips. The Wilson shapes are a bit more rounded off, but still have a slight rectangular shape to let me know by feeling the bevels how the racquet head is facing. To me it is more important to feel how quickly the grip can rotate in my hand and still retain the accuracy.

Try rotating a racquet in your hand with your eyes closed and get them in the right forehand or backhand grip quickly by feel alone. I suppose this is more significant for one handed backhand users. The Head shape gives you no doubt about how you are holding it but is just slightly more awkward to spin around in the fingers. Prince shapes are more squared off and seem to always confuse me, but you can spin that around in your hand like it was greased lightning! Wilson shapes are what I prefer and fits nicely in between the two extremes.

Of course we would most likely be using both hands to align our grip and racquet orientation in preparation to hit the ball, so mechanically the shape shouldn't make that much difference as I describe above. But for some reason this little thing that we call "feel" gets in the way of natural mechanics.
