How many active players are better on grass than Sam Querrey?

It just dawned on me that it's a pretty short list. How long is that list exactly, though?

My list:
- Djokovic
- Federer
- Nadal
- Raonic

I'm sure there are others who'd be a toss up against Querrey, but who else is definitively better? IS SAM QUERREY REALLY THE FIFTH-BEST GRASS COURTER IN THE WORLD?!?

In terms of number of grasscourt titles won by active players, Sam is very low down with a lone grasscourt title, albeit won at Queen's (2010).

Off the top of my head, after the Big 4 (and that doesn't, of course, include Raonic), guys like Isner, Lopez, Mahut, Gasquet, Karlovic, Cilic all have more grasscourt titles to their name so Big Sam isn't even in the top 10.

Solid points. I think he is a decent player, but there are a range of players that are above him on grass.

There’s a bunch though, along with the 4 mentioned there’s Anderson, Cilic, Berrettini, RBA, Goffin, Kyrgios, Isner, Coric, and probably like 10 others lol.

Querrey beat Djok in 2016 over two days. Think about that. He held his level even after a break in the match, to hold off the best player of all time even after that player had a chance to rest and clear his head.

Long breaks usually favor the better player. The GOATing/redlining journeyman nearly always falls back to earth after he's had a chance to think about what's going on. But not that day. That was one of the most glorious, enjoyable upsets of all time.

Cilic, Murray, Tsonga, and Anderson are all better than him on grass.

Don't know about Anderson. Querrey is 2-0 against him on grass (including the 5 setter at Wimbledon 2017) and has 1 grass title (Queen's Club) and 3 other finals vs. 0 grass titles and 2 finals for Anderson. Anderson does have the Wimbledon final over Querrey, but that's it.

Halle’18 title was a one-off. He has never won more than two grass court matches in a row before or after that week. In fact, he joined the WATLYNM Lodge immediately after that title run, losing in straight sets 1R Wimby’18 to then grass neophyte Medvedev as a 4-1 favorite. I would take Mannarino over Ćorić. He has a grass court title, three 4R Wimby results (Coric best is one 2R) and a 2-0 h2h results on grass. One of those grass wins was a great final set TB win in the Rosmalen’19 SF to advance and eventually win his first ATP title.

Mannarino is great on grass. He is able to take the ball incredibly early with those abbreviated strokes.

Agree about Coric, too. What happened to Coric's burgeoning grass game, and what happened to his game in general after that run in 2018?

FAA has the best result below current age 24. Berrettini won a grass ATP title at age 23 by beating FAA in the Stuttgart’19 final. Matteotini went 11-2 on the surface, losing only to Goffin and fedr in just his second season competing on grass.

It’s awfully easy to project a continued streak for the elite players but you’re ignoring the fact that the youngest of your bunch will be 38 in the fifth season of your supposed reign while those two I mentioned will still be under 30, one of them approaching age 25.

Develop some arithmetic and imagination before posting another embarrassing prognostication, son of Sureshs.

You mean 38 years old just like the player that had double match points to win the last edition?

Berrettini and FAA were both pretty much embarassed at Wimbledon. I can't think of any under 30 years old who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals yet (and the Elo reflects it btw).

EDIT: Kyrgios made the QF in 2014, and Pouille made the QF in 2016.

Those QF exceptions happened vs opponents clearly closer to prime years than what Matteotini and/or FAA will face in 2025. The Nadal was 28 when King Kyrgios decked him. He will be 39 in 2025 and it won’t be an upset if a youngster puts him and the rest of The Old Guard out to pasture then. But that requires imagination to envision instead of reading stats like dried out tea leaves, your specialty. I’m guessing you gave teenage fedr zero chance to make Wimby’01 QFs with a classic upset of King Sampras.

There was some disgustitude with two wrong calls against Chokeovic late 4th set, who had used up all his challenges out of mental muggery and was thrown off by those calls, so Querrey got good help with this. 9000% he never beats 2015ovic even from two sets up, like Anderson didn't.

I don't think it's necessarily a short list. Sure there are only a handful of decent grass courters past the Big 3 today, and Querrey is probably somewhere in there, but he could be 5th best or he could be 15th best or worse, and that's the fundamental flaw of this "5th best" reasoning IMO.

Querrey isn't consistent enough to make these claims about. On his day when he's on fire and hitting the cover off the ball he might be 5th best, but 90% of the time, playing average/bad tennis he's more in the latter category of 10th-15th best, or worse

Don't think a single next gen player excels on grass which helps Querrey here, 10-15 years ago the list would be a lot longer.

Idk man he is spotty and since 2018 he’s been really disappointing but I’m looking forward at the players who aren’t gonna stick around for the next few years and I think Coric can have a shot for Top 10 and Top 5 in grass.
