How much do professional tennis players pay their coaches?

I understand that a full time tennis coach of a pro player may be on a yearly contract that requires traveling. This may cost the player and offer extra for prize money too. What would be more interesting to see is the ongoing prices for the coaches who do not travel with players; the ones that are hired on hourly or weekly basis.

This topic has been prompted by my continuous thoughts of the local coaches in China who literally rip anyone who wants to play tennis off. Charges such as 150 US dollars (equivalent from the Yuan conversion) per hour seems quite unreasonable even if well qualified. Those coaches prefarably take the kids or amateur/recreational players so that they do not have to work too hard.

I hope to read some of the ongoing rates in pro tennis as well as with amateurs around the world.

It totally depends on the player's earnings, public profile and the coaches themselves. Becker, Edberg, Roche and Lendl all commanded multi-million dollar yearly contracts, but they coached only elite players. Many coaches have various provisions in their contracts as well. It was widely said (though never confirmed) that Becker received an extra 2 million dollars for every slam Novak won. Agassi paid Gilbert 1 million a year from 1994-1996, then 1.5 million every year after that until they parted ways in 2002 (confirmed by Gilbert).

What lower ranked players pay their coaches is anyone's guess. But someone like Gasquet or Monfils can't attract the Lendl's of the coaching world.

Lower ranked pros, say 100-200 are often on weekly extended contracts. Both work around eachother. In Canada and Northern USA for example coaches routinely have blocks where they're away touring and they build cred that way so they come back and command high clinic and private lesson fees.

Bonuses for higher placement are routine but from that 100-200 group it's obviously not as realistic outside 250s. Challenger circuit players will often get a coach for 2-3 specific tournaments that make travel sense.

Overall that might be around 25-40k on the year. But some coaches due to relationship will settle for paid travel and some percentage for prize money like 25-40%.

One of the commentators on ESPN said coaches are doing well if they make six figures. It seemed like they meant more in the $100-200k area as opposed to $500+k. And I assume this doesn’t include the bigger name coaches associated with the top players.

That's what I thought. Some coaches, who've even played in ATP before (were ranked below 100th spot when played), charged just 50 dollars/hourly.

Currently in China, I see those price hikes unbelievable. You can call it a good market for coaches or a plain highway robbery under the sun.
