How to volley heavy underspin ball at net?

How do you volley a fast ball directed at you with heavy underspin when you are in attack mode at the net? I keep hitting it into the net because of the underspin.

I think using the normal volley technique should be fine, since the bottom edge of the racquet leads slightly, it will impart underspin as a result. If you're hitting them into the net, you might be cutting at them, and inadvertently slapping them down.

The angle at which the ball will leave the face of a volleyers racket is partially dependent on the incoming spin. (the other factors being angle of trajectory of the ball and racket face angle).

If the angle of the volleyers racket is held constant, the underspin ball will deflect off of it to a position of less altitude than a ball that arrived to the volleyer with topspin. (The underspun ball will tend to "dump" itself into the net if volleyed the same way as the topspun ball).

Therefore if the ball altitude is low (near the net height) and it has underspin on it. The volleyer will have to "hit up" more to avoid dumping it into the net.

This is counterintuitive to someone used to playing opponents who hit topspin while they are at the net (myself included). The motion for volleying one type of spin repeatedly will dissapoint when used to volley underspin.

When playing an opponent who hits passing shots with underspin as opposed to topspin, effort should be made to get the racket moving thru a plane nearly horizontal to the court rather than the usuall dropping motion of the racket normally used to impart underspin on an oncomming topspin ball.

This shot is tough to handle and easy to dump into the net. Practice it out of match situation first and then see if you can use it under pressure.

Also don't try to do too much with this shot, use it as more of a first part of a sequence (hit it and close in tighter) than trying to win the point outright with it and you will avoid errors.
