Hybrid multi/syngut... terrible mistake

I strung up a hybrid of Multifeel mains and crossed with some OGSM I had lying around. 55/53 in an RF97A. What. The. Hell.

I’ll likely be sued by the tennis club for punching holes in the back wall when I was simply trying to do a soft drop volley. I’m pretty sure men in black are coming for me because I defied the laws of physics with this alien tech. This thing is generating its own energy and can probably power a small city. Those WMDs Bush was looking for? They’re these strings and they’re busy creating hyperspace wormholes every time a ball hits them.

Seriously though. I knew crossing with syngut instead of poly would add a little power but Holy F***!

Thanks for taking one for the team.
I can see OGSM in the mains and multi in the cross, but I can't imagine any benefit of the reverse. Now you've confirmed...

I've tried OGSM 57/Velocity55 and that wasn't too bad. If I were to try again, I might try OGSM 55/Velocity 53 as V tends to be very low powered and it could tame the power of OGSM.

I usually cross with cream and that’s great. I was just curious. The multi/syn setup is crazy comfortable but uncontrollable for my skill. Shocking how different it was.

I recently tried this sort of layout in a Volkl O10 325g tuned up to about 12.8 oz. and 10 pts. HL. For most of the year I can be entirely happy with 17 ga. syn. gut tensioned in the neighborhood of 56-58 lbs. When it gets hot in the middle of the summer, I might bump tension another pound or two, but I sometimes switch to the 16 ga. version of the same stuff. The heavier gauge doesn't soften up as drastically for me in the heat.

Picked up an affordable reel of Prince Premier Control 16 from TW just so that I'd have a multi on hand when somebody wants that string type in their frame. I've never had much luck with multis in my own racquets, but the curiosity bug got me and I tried a hybrid of the PPC in the mains and 16 ga. syn. gut in the crosses. Tensions for both at 56 - that's probably what I'd use for a full bed of 16 ga. syn. gut.

Similar result - the feel and control were a long way from what I get with full syn. gut. My winter playing schedule has slowed down to nearly zero, but I tried this hybrid when some pals asked me to fill in for some doubles. I was already a little rusty when I tried this new setup, but I couldn't hit or serve with any confidence at all. Just too flimsy and unpredictable. The other frame from that pair had a full layout of 17 ga. syn. gut and that bailed me out just fine. The contrast was a big surprise.

If I try this again perhaps in the spring, I might keep the syn. gut crosses at 56 lbs., but up the multi mains to about 60 lbs. Otherwise I'll mark this down as another lesson of "If it ain't broke,... ". Syn. gut is about as ordinary as it gets, but that stuff at the right tension just never lets me down.

I think I tried Cream/OGSM. But not the reverse.
But with the success that I've had with Velocity/Cream, and some flashes of goodness with Legend/Cream, maybe I should give OGSM/Cream a try.

To be clear I usually put the multi in the mains and cross it with cream. Haven’t tried OGSM in the mains. Let us know how that works out.

@jered @Traffic

Original post cracked me up. lol.

fyi ... @USPTARF97 and others were loving velocity/OGSM in Velocity thread. I thought OGSM was a medium powered sg ... something doesn't add up.

Hmmm... Yeah, I read that. Maybe it's the tension? 55/53. Or the frame, an RF97, which is fairly string sensitive. Multifeel is a little more powerful than Velocity as well which has a muted feel. All I know is that it behaved like a cannon.

Your loss was my gain ... still laughing from your post. Thanks. (y) There is a chance I might try Velocity/OGSM in Spring based on comments in Velocity thread. I like fb velocity 16 natural @52 ... also @54/52. My guess is I would try V/OGSM @54/52.
