Hybrid with 17g RIP Control

I have been using full stringbeds of 17g RIP control on my Head Radical MPs (18x20) and I like the feel and control. However often my opponents have hybrid stringbeds that produce way more topspin than I am capable of.

I am thinking of using up the rest of my RIP Control by doing hybrid jobs with Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour for the mains and the RIP Control for the crosses. What gauge PHT should I use with the 17g RIP Control crosses and at what tension? Usually string at 57# for mains and crosses.

putting rip control 17 in the crosses with a poly cross will diminish its durability by about 50% - 70%. Don't do it. Want more spin and better durability? Use gut mains with RIP 16 crosses. Trust me.

If you'd like to experiment, perhaps you should consider using RIP mains with very smooth copoly crosses. Presumably you should get more spin since there'll be less friction.

agreed, more spin will come. Durability will also go down a lot though. RC is an odd string. 17 breaks much faster than 16. The difference is larger than any string I've seen (over 20 yrs of stringing)

RIP 17 lasts just fine for me as a cross with poly in a 18x20, and performs very nicely. Drop the tension in the poly to around 53 and keep the RIP at 57. Go with a 17 or 18g poly (1.18-1.25).

Having always been a multi user, my thought was that I could get more spin with the Hurricane Pro Tour in the mains with RIP Control in the crosses to soften things up. Some of my opponents with hybrid setups are getting way more spin on their western forehand than I with mine.

it's not the equipment. it's the operator.

I'm stringing up MSV hex 17 mains and RIP 16 crosses tonight in one of my AG200's. Interested to see how it plays.

Tried It

Strung the mains with BPHT at 53 and the RIP at 57, both 17g. Plays o.k. but I don't notice that much increased spin. Little more power, sometimes too much. Other than that not that much different to me than the full bed of RIP 17g at 57.

Thinking of trying the Big Hitter Blue Rough next in the same hybrid setup, but I hear many touting BHBR in a full bed.

How do people compare the BHBR with BPHT?

No, it's both. Try bhbr/bbo.

*sigh*

That's just your default recommendation. In a thread where a guy said he didn't want elbow trouble, you told him to use that.

OP, I would honestly just keep using what you've been using, especially if you don't notice an increase in spin. And don't try Big
Banger Original. It's really harsh.

Hey there,
I'm about to try some hybrids with RIP control in the crosses because I'm a little tired of stringed variation in full polly, so I'm looking for more tension maintenance and more stability.

BUT : I've tried a shaped non coated poly in the mains (string kong banana), and it was awful ; it stuck immediately to the crosses (it was obvious, but I was too curious and too idiot).

So I'm looking for a poly (even stiff, I don't mind) main that really has low friction to this particular multi which I like because it's cheap and pretty.

Thanks !

i have used Tourna Big Hitter Silver as a smooth poly in the crosses to allow my shaped mains to snap back. Since you want to use RIP in the crosses maybe you could use the Big Hitter Silver in the mains to serve your purpose. Still think you will notch your RIP pretty quick. RIP control is mostly used full bed.

Hello!
thanks for your answer
That's why I want RIP in the crosses, I have no experience notching the cross strings as the main slide on the crosses. It just fizzles out but doesn't notch (in my experience).

So TBHS is smooth enough you think? Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I used Lynx Edge mains and RIP Control crosses for a year. I like how RIP control mutes the feel and "locks" in the mains so they don't move as much as a slippery string. Before that was using Hyper G mains with RIP crosses. Have recently switched rackets and moved on to a full poly setup.
