i would favor serena now i think she would beat mac 9 times out of 10 at least at this point.

next in line age wise is edberg and becker.

edberg probably cant play a good heel him being swedish and all that.

so i think boris becker is officially new bobby riggs.

Federer. The way he's been playing this year, he'd be lucky to get a game off Serena.

I think McEnroe would beat Edberg, at least right now. McEnroe is pretty competitive against guys like Courier and Chang on the Legends tour. He has remained active and is in good shape.

I watched Edberg play an exhibition against Tsonga (it's on youtube) and he looked terrible, despite the fact that Tsonga was feeding him softballs. Maybe it was just that Edberg was out of shape and rusty, I don't know.

But I think McEnroe's smaller and thinner body frame becomes an advantage in the older age range. His strokes are also more simple and compact, which should be a big plus for retired guys.

Actually they are about the same respective ages as Riggs and King were and also about the same age difference. I mentioned this to the guy at the HOF both at the USO this year where they had an exhibit (forget what anniversary of the match it was for) about that match. Which I believe (I think the exhibit mentioned this as well) is still by a long shot the most widely viewed tennis match in US history (maybe the world ?).

And that I thought that very matchup would sell to the general public. And I think if the two players were into it you could raise the money to get it done.

I'd be more interested to watch that match then the bogus exos they do at The Garden (Serena v/ Azarenka and Rafa v. DelPo this year).

Added benefit. Unlike Riggs, where the question is somewhat open at least to some, JMac doesn't have the constitution that would allow him to lay down. Though personally I think it not an issue because Serena would kill him. But who knows. Sign me up for a ticket.

Well Serena disagrees with you. This has been tried to be put together (new battle of the sexes match - I was around the negotiations) many times before between Mac and Serena and she herself didn't want to do it because she felt she would be embarrassed by John even though he promised he wouldn't.

i agree i think he would beat her and he also has the type of game that can really embarrass his opponents and make them look bad when hes hitting the right shots

I remember Mcenroe almost beat Roddick at WTT in 2011. Roddick was trash in those days though and it looked the match meant more to Mcenroe than Roddick.

I think all the pros from the becker - Edberg era ( and i'm not just talking the former top 10ers) would beat serena, men hit harder than women and are used to handling pace, serena occasionally faces players who can hit with her pace...and struggles, plus the men serve more intelligently hitting serves into the body, big kick serves out wide and down the middle while women players ( with the exception of sam stosur) rarely have that kind of skill.

Interesting. But I'd have to see it to believe it.

I saw both of JMacs doubles matches at the USO this year and thought he looked -- not so hot. I can't believe he could return Serena's serve. Or get her groundies back for that matter. She hits harder than he does, moves better and has a much better serve. Then again there is this though way back. It's a very funny read, particularly the training regime:

Do you think such a match would sell ?
