If Novak doesn't in U.S. Open, greater appreciation for Federer's greatness

If Novak doesn't win the U.S. Open, will you also have a greater appreciation for Federer's greatness? Novak is trying to win his third grand slam in one year, an achievement that Federer has achieved an amazing three times. Federer has so many records that are seemingly untouchable and this is another one.

Since 1969, here is how players going into the U.S. Open with already 2 grand slams for a year did at the U.S. Open.

1969 Laver - Won
1974 Connors - Won
1978 Borg - Final
1979 Borg - 4th Round
1980 Borg - Final
1988 Wilander - Won
1992 Courier - Semifinals
1994 Sampras - 4th Round
1997 Sampras - 4th Round
2004 Federer - Won
2006 Federer - Won
2007 Federer - Won
2008 Nadal - Semifinals
2009 Federer - Finals
2010 Nadal - Won

Short of having a heart-attack or getting injured, there's NO WAY Djokovic is NOT taking the UsOpen title. To pretend to think otherwise is wishful thinking at best, and borderline insane at worst.

Djoko is as big a favorite as Nadal was in RG 2008 or Fed was in UsO 2006, 2007. He is at a different level compared to the rest of the ATP.

If Djoko loses to someone in the UsOpen, it will be as BIG as the Soderling 2009 F.O upset of Nadal. Basically in the top 3 of this decade..

Totally agree. Like I have said before,it's so certain that they may as well go ahead and give him the trophy and skip the whole thing. Shoot, just give him the trophy to the rest of the tournaments he plays in this year as well, and be done with it. It's already decided anyway.

Even if Novak wins, Roger is still great:) Good summary, I think Sampras could win 3 slams at least once. To whom he lost at those US opens?

Exactly. Because Nole is the 4 time defending champ at the USO who happens to be undefeated at that slam.

Sampras lost 7-5 in the 5th set to Yzaga in the 4th round in 1994, and lost a 5th set tiebreak to Korda in the 4th round in 1997.

From Wimbledon 1993 to Wimbledon 1994, Sampras was at his absolute peak, playing his best tennis and enjoying the most dominant period of his career. However during USA's Davis Cup quarter-final against the Netherlands, he suffered an ankle injury. The tendonitis in his left ankle forced him to withdraw from all the US Open warm-up events. He was badly short of match practice, and during the match against Yzaga, he also developed blisters on his right foot and was struggling to move. Plus he physically hit the wall.

Korda was an incredibly talented shotmaker who could beat anyone when he was on song, and he caused Sampras a lot of problems. At Wimbledon in 1997, Korda took an in-form Sampras to 5 sets. Sampras said that he was very happy with how he played in every match of that tournament. Plus he also beat peak Sampras 13-11 in the 5th set of their Grand Slam Cup semi-final in 1993, and pushed him to 5 sets in the 1994 Indian Wells final.

Quoted for truth. In fact, if Joker wins the USO, I'd consider him to have won the calendar slam since he would have won RG had it not been for Fred's stupid, uncalled-for, and totally irresponsible intervention.

Mustn't forget that had he adopted no gluten superhuman training a few years ago, he would have won every major since turning pro, and been given at least 10 honorary majors from the 90's to make him the undisputed GOAT, who never actually lost a tennis match but rather decided he needed to have a holiday and decided to 'lose' so as to go home. Also, if he ever gets around to donating blood, we will see cancer cured, parkinson's and alztheimers treated, and an instant way to regenerate lost cells, similar to stem cell research only better, and he will also eliminate poverty, war, racism, death etc.

I agree man, he could roll out there in a wheelchair and win. He should just hit one handed backhands all tournament. Might as well.
